Does anyone have any experience with the level of activity from rattlesnakes and scorpions in AZ in January? I'm sure different regions of the state vary but how would you compare the north vs. the southern part? I read that the level of activity seems to go down but bark scorpions tend to be active throughout the whole year. Any advice would be appreciated!

I used to work in southern AZ, outside all day, and in January there is little to no rattlesnake activity. The only time they might be more active is mid day when at its warmest. They really aren’t moving much. I can’t remember ever seeing a scorpion that time of the year. Scorpions seem to be more active at night, in the warmer months, in my experience. Jan is one of the best times of the year to be out in the desert imo.

Last time I hunted AZ in late Dec early Jan it was highs in the 50s and lows in the teens at night. Mainly Prescott area and north. Never saw a scorpion and would have blown my mind to see a snake out in those temps.

I personally do not worry about either despite being out and about all year.

If you want to wear snake gaiters, then go ahead. They will help quite a bit with the various plants that love to poke and grab your legs.

Just shake out your boots and clothes before putting them on in the morning. Otherwise I would not worry about the barks scorpions.

Live in AZ in the winter a bit north west of Phoenix in the desert we usually don’t see rattlers til mid March at the earliest, scorpions kinda the same, but usually only see them at night when we do, I sleep outside on a cot almost all winter and never really worried

I personally ran into a scorpion down south last year. Picked my glassing pad up and he was crawling around in the rocks below. That was January 6th.
