I wanted to share my experience this week. After putting in for 6 years I got a bull elk tag in 6a in Arizona, I live in Cave Creek AZ so the drive was about 2 hours from home. We went up on Thanksgiving day to set up elk camp, we were a group of 5, special thanks to them for their guidance and their spotting skills.
Also special thanks to my wife for saying I know this is special, go have fun and good luck.
So the first couple of days it was hike to top of a job and glass, then back in the late after noon and glass again. Then Tuesday the 9th we spotted 3 bulls bedded down on another ridge 1.5 miles away at 10am.
Damm those Swarovski 15x56 are good.
We came up with a plan and got in the atv and headed east of them, hiked up the slope, so we would be above them. Now the fun part, trying to find them in the Pinions, I thought it as a needle in a
hay stack kind of thing. When we got there Gary ( AZKillerz on Instagram) he spotted his antler moving because he was scratching his back, we never were able to see the other 2. One of the others was a 6x7. I stood there for 3.5 hours on a bipod at 88 yards with no shot because he as protected by the slope and some large rocks protecting him.
I was waiting for him to stand up but the sun never hit him he was in the shade safe as could be, so he thought.
Well he didn’t so we crept in slow, we still had the wind in our favor and got in to 47 yards.
From there all I could see was the back of his head and his neck. I made my shot and here his is.
I am shooting a 300win mag with a 200 grain bullet.
We drove the atv right up to him with no pack out. Thank you lord for saving my back.
Hopefully one day I’ll get drawn again, although I realize being this lucky may never happen again.
