You might encounter a lion in pretty much any Coues deer unit. For those with experience in this unit, is it worth having a lion tag in my pocket?
AlwaysFirst Coues deer hunt for me - Oct. season in 36C. Very interested to visit and hunt in an environment that is radically different from my Mid-Atlantic and Texas whitetail experience.

While generally good advice this thread is about draw hunts not OTC hunts so harvest quotas wouldn’t apply in this case.Don't forget to check the Harvest quota.
Gotcha! I have been corrected. I was only thinking of the deer quota not the lionI believe Duckcarver asked if he should pick up a lion tag for his deer hunt. There is a quota of 63 lions in those units. Has nothing to do with OTC Deer tags. Just the quota on lions. OTC lion tags.
Not sure but AZGFD should have harvest info. I know Bear gets hit hard. Not sure about cats.Gotcha! I have been corrected. I was only thinking of the deer quota not the lion
That said has any unit ever hit the lion quota?
Thanks. I'll prepare for heat and sun exposure, but have to admit I've already looked at the long-term Nov. average high for Sasabe, AZ (69 degrees) and hope that the last week of October is close enough to November to stay cool this year.100% yes in the 36 units.
Just as an FYI. It can still get close to 100 degrees down there sometimes in the October hunts.
I spend a lot of time down near Sasabe. It could be 95 or it could be 55 in late Oct early Nov. Last few halloweens have been on the warm side with the highs being 80-90. Luckily it does finally cool off at night by thenThanks. I was in 36 in 2023 and it was 85-88 degrees during the day on October 27, that I know for sure. The week before I got there it was in the 100s.Thanks. 2024 36A october hunt was pretty much mid-90s until the last two days when it was cloudy/rainy if memory serves me rightI was in 36 in 2023 and it was 85-88 degrees during the day on October 2, that I know for sure. The week before I got there it was in the 100s.
The lion quotas are set for zones, which comprise several units. And yes, that zone reaches quota.Gotcha! I have been corrected. I was only thinking of the deer quota not the lion
