I know its probably been beaten to death.

From what I've read they all have their pluses. Just read about the BTX 85 and they have me convinced, however the wallet says NO!

You better just get the Swarovski “x” and be done. You can eventually build a system to fit your every need/want. I went through this same deal. There will be a kowa 77 guy chime in, The buy once cry once guy, the meopta guy, it’s really up to you and if you would be satisfied with the meopta you won’t be sorry but if you’re going to get it and keep wondering, just get the best and quit messing around. I will tell you I have looked through the meopta and it is stunning. I’ve owned an atx and it is stunning as well. I personally don’t like having a lot of weight in my pack and that 82 is pretty big. You could buy an atx 85 and then in a year or two pick up a 65 mm for around 6-700$ and basically have two spotters. And idk if I would get the NF version? It’s a lot higher than the rest and you can pick up a cabelas version on her for $1400 and they are awesome.

I’ve had all of those with the caveat I had the Meopta S2, not the TS82. I now run an ATX. Love the modularity to change out objective sizes and the glass is better than the other two. If you can swing the price and weight, it’s fantastic. If weight was concerning I’d go to the ATS line or find an older ATM.

"I am the meopta Guy" ;) I can verify that the Meopta S2 is brilliant, usable right up to 70x (I have the 20-70x eyepiece).

I grabbed it on special at CL...too good a deal to pass up, the Swarovski was out of my budget, and had money been no object, yes I would have bought it. But its still a lot of $$ for the Meopta s2 when you think about other commitments many folk have here, kids, school fee's, etc.

I feel the Meopta is a best value, and your probably getting the optimum value for your dollar at this price point before the law of diminishing returns really kicks in.

I had narrowed down to the Kowa 883 or the S2, but the "no box" special at $1799 got me over the line, the Kowa was a few hundred more than that if I recall correctly.

I dont think I'll miss any game with the s2 vs the Kowa or an ATX.

However, this was just my personal situation and I try to live within my means and own what I can afford to own, and your situation may differ. If money is not an issue at all and it wont compromise your other commitments then I'd grab the ATX or it will probably eat at you.

FYI if I hit it big ill be buying;

Outdorrsman Tripod
Outdoorsman Fluid Head
Swarovski BTX with 115mm lense
ATX with 65mm and 95mm lenses
Doubler

But right now I have been enjoying what I have been able to afford;

Promaster 525 CF
Promaster spch fluid head/will soon have Sirui VA5 head (have done a deal with my son)
Meopta s2 20-70
Meopta 10x42 B1.1 HD

Ben,

I hunted around Ft. Peck Reservoir this year over a Vortex Razor 65 (not mine). Although it works well in the timbered area it didn't impress me in the open areas around the lake. That's why I was inquiring about the 80+.
I do like your idea of picking a 65 up later however.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I may have changed my mind about the BTX. From what i now understand the BTX is a fix powered optic?

I agree with Pc3 in the value of the S2 vs the ATX. I used the Meopta S2 for a couple of years and then bought an 85 ATX this last season. The S2 was a huge step up from the Vortex I was using before that, but the ATX has a very slight advantage in clarity with my eyes. Granted when I run the price vs performance numbers between the two, the S2 was by far the better bang for the buck in my experience. Maybe a 10% difference in performance vs the $1000 difference in price. The modularity of the ATX is what I prefer, so that is the one I went with, but would have no issue using the S2 if I wasn't planning on changing the any of the optic pieces around. Just my personal observations. Hope it helps.

Yes BTX is fixed but with this system you can mix and match....swap your btx/atx with any of the lenses you own etc.

I'd assume the whole series is sorted 100% for waterproofing, Swaro would sought you out if you had an issue I'm sure.
