ATC/STC take the place of larger spotters?

If you weren’t worried about weight, would you still choose the ATC/STC over a larger 65/80mm spotters (assume similar alpha glass)?

I did. Sold my ATM 20-60x65HD Magnesium scope after comparing it head to head over a few days with my ATC17-40. For “old” eyes the ATC beat my ATM in low light, had a much larger field of view, went to lower power for first look glassing, etc. 40x was adequate on the top end with a phone skope attached for my use.

I think the new scope vs a 14 year old made the ATC better in low light, but it it sure surprised me! Had to repeat the exercise watching sheep on the mountain two nights in a row to believe it.

Sure a lot nicer in the backpack too!!

I dumped my Vortex Razor 20-60 for the ATC. But I’m not sure I’d feel differently if I had a big swaro either. The places I’ve hunted in CO, close to the roads/trails where most folks would lug a big spotter, you aren’t going to see any animals just due to the amount of pressure those areas get anyway. So it’s tough to justify carrying a big spotter where I currently hunt.

All I can say is I have the STC and the ATS (in 80 mm.).

I use the STC 3 to 1 to the ATS. Doesn’t mean it’s better, but it’s small compact and always with me.

If I could only choose one…. that would be tough. And I’d probably go for the 80.

And I also had the 65 ATS, and I almost quit using it because the STC was so close. In fact, I sold the 65.

If I had to be stuck with 1, I’d choose the stc honestly.

I love my 95 but it’s spent a more time in the safe since the stc came out.

If I’m worried about weight I’m taking the ATC, if I’m worried about judging game over 2 ish mile I’d take a 80mm object or up

This is where I’m at, I find myself trying to judge Mike deer at 1-2+ miles often and my little razor 56 is not great

I decided to give a Kowa 774 a try. If I don’t love it I’ll sell it and go with an STC and call it a day. Thanks for those that shared their opinions

I looked for a 77 kowa for a long while I’ve heard great things, landed on the ATC and a meopta S2 for big and small, let us know what you think

Recent experience I had with the Swaro ATC: glassed a deer at 4.25 miles away. With the ATC, tripod, and digital zoom via digiscope, I was just able to make out an antler in a few frames of the video when I went frame-by-frame. Say, 75% confidence it was a buck. No clue how big or wide, or if legal buck.

This was with ideal lighting conditions. Mid-morning, bright and sunny. 6000 ft elevation. The practicality definitely drops off rapidly outside of perfect sunny conditions.

I felt like this was clearly the practical limit of the ATC/STC for big game.
