Will the the light intake of the 50 vs the 42 justify the weight difference?
I know, I know “they are so heavy”, “swfa is just as good”, yada yada yada.
Let’s stick to the topic here lol
I want a NF and I want the best.

The x42 is a superior scope optically. There are legacy posts on snipershide where NF engineers were discussing how its mag range, objective size, and internals combine to make it better than the x50 version.

I have the 42 objective model with moar reticle and have used both optics. I like the 42 mm version and haven’t found it lacking in low light performance.

You may want to hold off on buying an ATACR. First reason, lots of talk about NF releasing a new/updated NXS/NX8/ATACR type of scope for shot show. Second reason, it really looks like the new vortex gen3 may be good competition for the 4-16 4-20 ATACR.

My long range hunting rifle has had the following scopes over the last 10yrs.

SHV 4-14 SFP (not FFP)
SHV 4-14 FFP (small FOV on 4x)
(1) Vortex LHT 3-15x42 FFP (wandering zero 2-3”)
(2) Vortex LHT 3-15x42 FFP (periodic zero loss, >4”)
ATACR 4-16x42 (heavy)
NX8 2.5-20x50 FFP (swallow depth of field and high parallax

Vortex has consistently disappointed me on several scopes now. I haven’t found anything that’s perfect, but at least NF holds zero.

The ATACR 4-16x42 was my favorite scope of the bunch but it’s pretty heavy and tight on the 4x. It lives on an 18” 6ARC gas gun now and is perfect in that role. It’s also my favorite of my ATACRs in general, just a great optic.

So the 4-16 atacr - its 3 oz heavier than the beloved Maven, 1-2 oz heavier than an NX8, 3-4oz heavier than most Tenmiles. When you compare it to other scopes, its really not much more weight and I think you get better optical quality and one of the toughest most reliable scopes on the market. Mine sits on my UL back country rifle. A few extra ounces is worth the peace of mind when you are several miles back…

Agreed, bigger impact was the switch to 2.5 instead of 4x on the low end. It’s all trade offs.
