Arrow Weight Differences.

So my ICS 300s were a little underspined for my set up and draw length. They weighed in at 460grs with 125 grams point. So I got a dozen Axis 5mm 260s. The ICS 300s kept giving me a slight left tear i couldn’t tune out and could occasionally fix by very precise form. I cut one of the Axis to length and fletched it. Set it up with the stock HIT insert and it weighs 530grs. I haven’t chronod the heavier arrows yet. But I’m shooting a Halon 6 with 30” draw and 85% mods. The Axis arrows tune perfect.

Thoughts?

What’s your question? Yes there is a weight difference. You will defiently notice that much distance at longer ranges. I bumped up about 80gr and pretty much lost 10 yards. My 70 turned I to a 60. 60-50 and so on. I use to shoot 30-70 pins and now 20-60 with very close to the same pin gap.

You'll lose speed for sure, but your bow will be more efficient. You also added more weight up front with the HIT inserts, looks like you softened up the 260s nicely. Nothing wrong with sending straight flying logs downrange.

The lighter 300 ICS are clocking at 278fps and the Axis 260s are right at 260fps. I can cut the Axis about 3/4” shorter but I don’t want to go further as I like my arrowheads just in front of the riser. So the 9-10grs probably won’t make up much difference.

I guess I’m just wondering g if it’s worth the trade off in velocity for a better tuning arrow.

My guess is nock fit or position of the insert inside arrow to rest(node). Typically a shop will cut arrow 1” in front of rest and say it’s for for safety reasons but it is also for tuning. Too long of an arrow can cause problems...

If ranges are known I’ve have not found that speed made a difference in accuracy between 240-280. The straighter flying arrow will penetrate better.

OP, try this and it will answer your question; Setup and tune your bow to the heavier arrow shooting it at 40 yds. Then use the same setup to shoot the lighter arrow and see how much higher the light arrow impacts.

hint...it ain't going to be much different.....

To me a good tuning arrow trumps everything else. It’s all about arrow flight, if your having flight issues changing to an arrow that flys better is a move in the right direction.

I also agree 9 or 10 grains won’t make a difference. If you have the arrows shoot them. I personally like to stay at 280+ some guys shoot slower and are perfectly happy. I’m already compromising trajectory shooting 280fps with a 490gr vs 310 with a 405gr. I noticed a big difference in trajectory and wouldn’t personally want to drop another 20fps.

I turned the bow up to 70lbs. She’s moving right along around 285ish and still shoots nice clean bullet holes. Actually I’m building up two identical arrows right now and will shoot her tomorrow for groups at distances. If these work out the. I’m gonna just ditch the ICS arrows and use them for another bow.

I bottomed out the limbs. Checked the timing, through paper still perfect bullet holes.

291fps. I’m going to stick with the Axis. They seem like a solid arrow.

530gr at 291 is bad medicine!! You will have enough energy to kill anything you hit with that setup.
