Arrow speed?

Hello all just curious what your arrow speed is? Im shooting a 454 grain arrow with a 27.5 draw at 266 fps . Does that met the criteria for deer/ elk with 71.5 KE Thanks in advance ! Happy 4th to you all!!

Sounds about perfect!

My arrow is moving about 290 with TAW of 495.

The criteria for deer and elk is not a number. Its what you shoot well coupled with some forethought into setup optimization and shot selection with that setup. Any numbers associated with that is simply data to aid in those choices.

I think my short draw length is definitely slowing it down . Thought about dropping arrow weight but it seems like a pretty middle of the road weight…..

You’re plenty fine, shot placement is key.

27.5”, 440TAW at 290fps, I personally like being above 275 and prefer 280’s. Your setup will work for anything you want to kill. I was shooting 500gr at 270 ish and am happy to have dropped weight and picked up speed with my new setup.

I’ve killed elk with arrow from 330gr to 510gr. Low to mid 400’s is what I’ve found is a good spot for speed and penetration. I’m still passing though bulls with 440gr and a 2” cut mechanical.

I’m shooting 410gr TAW @ 283fps. I also have 27.5” draw. Have shot 4 mature bucks with a 3 blade fixed & gotten pass throughs on all 4. Wouldn’t hesitate to shoot an elk with same setup

Everything in archery hunting equipment is a tradeoff. Its up to you to determine if the trades are right for your needs. MY experience is elk are easier to get close to than deer, and more margin for error in the vitals so arrow speed is less important. If building an elk arrow I think its about perfect. IF building a " do it all " arrow its a little slow for me.

Personally, I would probably shoot for 410 - 430 TAW and it should bring your speed into high 270s low 280s.

My OPINION is the 30 to 50 grains of arrow weight impacts penetration less with modern arrows and components than the speed sacrifice and trajectory at typical hunting ranges.

Im debating changing inserts to loose 35 grains and see what the speed is ....

It might be worth getting 3-5 arrows setup at a lower weight, shoot them against your current setup and see if either group better and if the difference in sight gaps is measurable enough at your ranges to warrant the lighter arrows.

So made one arrow at 422 grains and the other at 454. Gained 10 fps KE is identical . Probably just shoot the 454 since I have 6 built already.

I'm at 291 right now but anything between 270 and 300 works for me. My only stipulation is if I'm shooting any non vented fixed heads or any fixed bigger than 1 1/8 I keep it under 280-285 for easier tuning.

500 grain arrow 28" 255fps and a Iron Will I was able to get a full pass through on a elk pelvis bone. Probably not a shot I would take again but it did work...

For elk, standing still and not moving is important.

That arrow speed is fine, my last set up was 447 TAW 29” draw at 271 fps. Shot a moose that was quartering hard away and it ended up going through and sticking in the offside shoulder knuckle. Entire arrow was inside the cavity. Your setup will be fine on elk and deer

I was able to get a full pass through on an elk pelvis bone. Probably not a shot I would take again but it did work…

Just curious what kind of shot angle led you to have to shoot through the pelvic bone?

510 grains 291 fps 29 inches at 76 pounds just put it back to 82 pounds but have not shot it through the garmin again yet..
