Now that we're back on topic, what part of Arkansas are you in? Those are awesome pics. My little guy loves watching elk videos and I'd like take him to see some in their "natural" state and Arkansas is pretty close.

By the buffalo river in Boxley Valley. There is a resident herd there that you can normally see from the road. Google Tim Ernst elk pics.

Awesome pics. I've put in for that dang tag the last 6 years, and still no luck. I've seen a heard a few times while driving to Ponca to float the Buffalo. If I lived in that part of AR and the weather averaged 20 degrees cooler, I wouldn't want to move. Instead, I want to move. Ha, thanks again for the pics. There are some really pretty places in this state, and the elk do seem to be doing well.

My son drew the Arkansas elk tag this year, 2014. There were 6 wither sex permits and 2 of them were for youth hunts. My son drew unit 3 which begins on Oct 27th. Wish us luck! Any advice would be great. I've seen some bulls in unit 3 but nothing to go crazy over. Arkansas elk hunting is a rare event to say the least. My 12 year old had no idea how lucky he really is and what a special tag he holds.

WOW I would be out there every weekend scouting it out, talking to the elk biologist maybe even try to find a guide, on of the pubic land tags is a once in a lifetime deal. If you want PM, I know some people around there that might know more or guides, the AGFC should be some help.

we have scouted when it was hot when it was cold. yes I've scouted but I'd like any advice for anyone who has hunted arkansas elk in unit 3. We are scouting tomorrow and wednesday as well. I'll scout next week and the week after. One hunter told me he scouted 20 days so he has been some help as well. Yes AGFC has been a HUGE help. You still got to check all the places they use and they range over a huge area. I'm scouting more through the week and skipping weekend scouting since the hunt is mon-fri. There is only one tag for a bull this week so maybe the pressure won't be too bad. This week is the first season of 2 that are open. No bull has been killed yet.

edited to correct. I said AGFC has been help but I really meant the game wardens have been a huge help.

Op hope you don't mind if i put up a pic....this pic was taken just outside of siloam springs on my uncles property on the Illinois river by my youth leader at my church of a small bull,I've been told that there is a small herd downstream just on the other side of the state line in ok but the closest herd i know of is a long way from here in central ar, so we either have alot more than we think or the herd in ok is moving upstream....but either way its crazy seeing an elk here in NW AR.

Edited to add. Here is my son Jack's 2014 Arkansas Elk. He was 1 of 6 hunters to draw an either/sex tag which is basically a bull tag. He shot the bull at 187 yards and the bull just made a small 50 yard circle and fell over dead.

There were 18,000 applicants for the AR public land tags last time I checked.(only 6 bull/either sex tags total). Ouch terrible odds! Somebody has to draw though.

It was interesting reading about all the eastern states that have elk in them. Never knew the herds were getting that big again.

I had the pleasure and privilege of hunting the elk herd there during the first year they held the hunt. I used to be on the RMEF committee for Jasper, and we lived in Harrison and a friends dad had property adjacent to the buffalo. The elk were doing number on his fences around the property. Got lucky enough to take the second largest bull on the private land hunt for the first year, a decent 5x5. Nowhere near the size of the bulls that were taken along the buffalo, BUT, I was very lucky to get that bull. There were 5 hunters allowed to hunt the property, and I had knew right spot. Didn't hurt that I spent two months scouting them. Funniest part was that we had to call them in to Game and Fish if we shot one, and the biologists came out to take blood samples, tissue samples, took a few ticks back with them, etc...they were funny! I had an amazing time on that hunt. Because I lived there, got to encounter the herd down along the buffalo a lot during deer and turkey seasons. Got sidetracked from deer hunting on many a day chasing and calling elk. Up until one day the Game and Fish asked me how my hunting morning had been. I didn't get a deer that day, but got sidetracked (a regular occurrence) chasing and calling a 8x7 bull. he was HUGE and bugling, so I got to within 30 yards during deer archery season. Now back to the game and fish.....once I said I had no luck deer hunting, he asked if I got any pics of the big bull I called in. He was watching me the whole time....LOL. Pretty cool guy, he just asked that I not call them like that (keep in mind this was the prior to the first year we could hunt them) and said that I could be cited for harassing game...LOL. He also said that he didn't approach sooner because he thought I was going to poach that monster, and was glad to see that I was just enjoying the interaction.

Interesting that he mentioned that he could cite you for harassing game. I have heard the same thing from people calling in waterfowl out of season to get pictures that wardens mentioned that they could be issued tickets for harassing the birds. Makes me wonder if people, professional wildlife photographers, run into that issue when they are out in the field because I know some of them use decoys as well.
