Argument against small caliber? Blood trail/exit wounds?

I shot a smallish mule deer buck with a 338 pushing 225 TTSX at 2750 at probably 200yds. It was a slight quartering away so entrance was at the back of the ribs and exit was 3 or 4 in behind the shoulder, IIRC. Anyway, it had sucked the guts out of both holes and also into the chest cavity... I swore off of shooting smaller game(deer etc) with big bullets that day. I suppose if I was shooting so far away I needed the BC of larger bullets, I would go bavk but that was enough destruction for me.

338 win mag was a bit more than I needed

Its certainly more than is needed but my experience shooting deer with a .338 win was always excellent. Nice big straight hole all the way through and never any nastiness. As far as terminal performance goes it was as ideal a caliber for my hunting as ive ever seen.
