Heading to central Idaho in September for first backcountry hunt.

I will be carrying a 9mm for personal protection against 2 and 4 legged critters, cause it's what I got....

Im comfortable with my accuracy, but wanted to get some thoughts/opinions on my weapon of choice and ask what others carry?

Thanks in advance, and Happy Hunting!
I carry a 9mm as well. It's not a big caliber but lots of rounds and it should do the job. At least scare away any trouble.

What about a head shot with 9mm? If the bear is ten feet away which? Thinking if it’s charging and vitals are protected.

I carry the Glock 20 but keep in mind that with any semi auto, if you press the muzzle against the attacker, you will probably have a malfunction or failure to feed after the shot.
I know this is about handguns... but I am surprised pepper spray is not mentioned. They are lightweight and nice to have along as well.

I carry a XDM 4.5" in 10mm running the 220gr Hard Cast flat nose from buffalo bore. While I haven't had to defend myself from a bear, I did use it to finish off the moose I shot last week. Moose was 50.5" and seemed fairly large compared to my buddies 52.5" (hindquarters were 5-10% larger). Bullet entered the first vertebrate from about 5ft away, made it all the way through the spine and was recovered in the neck when we cleaned the skull up. The bullet had 0 deformations and appeared to have lost less than 5% of its mass from one side of the nose of the bullet. If I'm coherent when I get off shift tonight I'll dig up the photo of the shell so you can see the point blank performance of what seems to be considered the "go-to" round.

Last thing, a guy was mauled by a grizzly sow a couple hours from where I was hunting while I was out. He lived cause his partner shot the bear off of him instead of running. The photos in the article and facebook from the incident just help to reinforce how fast it can all happen. Shot placement with the biggest gun you can shoot accurately is key. For me, that just happens to be an XDM 4.5" in 10mm. Good luck with your choice and hopefully it never has to be used that way.

I shoot IHMSA with my 10.5" super blackhawk. NV only allows up to 8" barrel during archery season, so a 7.5" SB would work. I use full loads with 240 Hornady XTP for silhouettes.

Depends where I am. in grizzly country or even close to it carry my Glock 20 with hard cast. For every place else I carry either a Glock 43 or FN9c, same two that carry the everyplace the rest of year.

sounds like plenty of penetration to me. I want to switch from my Taurus Tracker .44 mag to a double stack 10mm for next season. I just can't get over the overwhelming devastation of 16 or 17 rounds potentially flying at an animal with those very rounds you are using. Rock Island Ultra FS HC 10mm is looking mighty good, or a Glock 40.

I carry a glock 19 but we don't have bears around here. Went to CO and also brought the glock since they only have black bears. If I was in griz country I would bring something larger though. Just read about a hunter in Montana that had to shoot one. Supposedly 3rd incident in a week there. Conditions are favorable for the bears to be out later in the year at least in that area.

Good post Kreig^

Penetration matters in the case of a charging bear....... these Hard cast bullets just plain work to get to CNS or vitals that will incapacitate quicker. XTP, Hollowpoints and/or Frangible bullets are designed for expansion...not what a guy wants, IMO.

Critical to function check in a semi auto...as the bullet design doesn't feed as well as round nose.

Heres the link to that guy that killed a charging Grizz in its tracks at Elmendorf AFB with a G20 and Hardcast bullets.
