Good Morning Fellow Hunters,
My hunting partner and I are heading to Idaho Unit 48 for our first elk hunt and my first out of state trip. I have done endless amount of research and narrowed down a few areas that I would like to concentrate on and would love to get some insight from people that have actually hunted this particular unit. I will be hunting from Sept 16th to the end of the season. A little bit about myself, I am 31 years old from Northern California and a father of two very young boys. I am a Navy Vet and didn't start hunting until 2009. I love hunting, fishing, camping, and family. Please PM me if you wouldn't mind having a conversation. Thanks in advance.

Get up on top and stay there. I hunted it last year and had a blast! Take a trail up to nearly get on top and then get going running ridges. Was able to call in two separate bulls last year, they really responded to cow elk calls. Good luck.

No problem man, we found elk on every east or north facing slope that did not have a trail running up it. Get up high, stay up high, and only come down if you need water. It is steep country, but not very high elevation compared to Colorado. Stop by and see the First Lite boys in Sun Valley and go see Papa Hemingway's grave up there too. Awesome country, and though I am hunting Colorado this year. I will be back. Also, didn't see or hear any wolf activity at all. Spoke to the GW and he said they had pretty much killed them out over the past few years. You can buy an elk tag and hang it on a deer or black bear also. Awesome state, I would love to someday live up there.

TWP,
Sounds like you had an awesome hunt, hope that when it is all said and done I can say the same. Thanks again for the information it is great hearing experiences from other hunters. We will be there for close to two full weeks so hopefully my hunting partner and I can make something happen. That is good to hear that you didn't witness any wolf activity. Best of luck to you in Colorado I hope your plans come to fruition. Once again thanks for having a conversation with me.

Just got back from 10 days in Unit 48. Seems to be plenty elk in some areas, some areas not so much. And there are definitely wolves in the area we were in. Had them howling not far from the tent on more than one occasion. I agree with TWP, get up high and glass for the elk. The area is steep and the elk like to hang off the edges about 2/3 the way up the mountain. The bugling was mainly in the mornings from 7:30-8:30 then pretty quiet. Got a few to respond to locator bugles in the afternoon but not much. Had a few close encounters with cow calling but luck just wasn't with us this trip. The farthest we went in was about 3-4 miles. Didn't see anyone else back in that far but there were plenty elk back there. Just tough going to get to them. We camped back in a ways up top to try get ahead of them but most guys were hunting from the trailhead and didn't seem to be getting back real far. Lots of weeknd warriors but mid week was really quiet.
