I got lucky, pulled a rabbit out of a hat this year and got selected for an archery antelope tag in CA this year. The zone is up in Clear Lake, about 11 hours north from where I live. I have never hunted antelope not to mention archery hunted for antelope. After looking at the unit on OnX I found that almost the entire unit is public land.

I guess to round out my ramble, I am reaching out to see if anyone has experience with this hunt and would be willing to give me some pointers or nuggets of wisdom on where to start and how best to focus the limited time that I can carve out from work.

Thanks!

Spot and stalk with a bow is very difficult. They will see you hundreds of yards away. If the terrain is completely flat, it is almost impossible. A blind over water might be your best bet. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Call DFW and ask to speak with the Biologist for the area. They will likely be out of the redding office. My experience is they have been super willing to help. I believe there is actually contact info for them on the letter they sent to you when they informed you of the tag. I was lucky too this year and I drew a surprise valley rifle tag. Pretty stoked. I know the area pretty well so I like my odds.

I didn’t realize they had antelope out there. I’ve been on several fires on the Mendocino NF. Camp was usually either in Clearlake, Upper Lake or Stonyford. Never saw any lopes but it’s cool country. Bring your fishing rod, Clear Lake has GIANT large mouth bass

Congrats on the tag. I can't be of any help, as I've never archery hunted Pronghorn. With that said, I don't think you'll struggle to find a decent buck in that area. Killing it with a bow is a different story. Good luck! Share your story when the hunt is done.

Firedad, the OP is referring to the Clearlake Reservoir in far NE California. He should still bring a fishing rig though. There is good fishing in that part of California. Modoc county has a bunch of small lakes with good trout fishing.

different clear lake. That being said there actually is a small herd near Arbuckle/Williams. It is barely hanging on as a herd and there are no hunts there but there are a couple boomer bucks in the group. Every once in awhile if you are driving I-5 in the area you can see them from the interstate. Always have to do a double take.
