Applying sight tapes to wheels

One my biggest gripes (although small in the grand scheme) with adjustable sights is getting the sight tape on perfectly at 20 yards because the distance indicator is always in the way (like on a Fast Eddie). I would love a design that allows the slider wheel/adjustment to move without moving the sight housing so that you can easily apply the sight tape anywhere on the wheel and then spin it to the indicator and lock it in place. Does such a thing exist? I know the new Fast Eddie Boonie allows you take the wheel off completely, but as I understand it, the wheel has two set screws so it has to go back on exactly how it came off - meaning you'd still have to place the sight tape onto the wheel perfectly.

Why not just pull the indicator off, then put it back on?

Don't use a Fast Eddie, but I usually pull my indicator, put tape on, then put the indicator back on at the yardage it should be.

I’ve loosened the indicator on the Fast Eddie before and it makes it way easier to get it on the wheel, but you still have to get that sticker onto the wheel pretty accurately. You probably get a quarter inch of wiggle room, but I like to have the indicator flush against the tape instead of slightly raised so I know exactly where it’s pointing. Doing that takes away a lot of the room for error.

Do I just really suck at applying stickers?

Put a mark on the edge of the wheel with a fine point marker or something where 20, or 60, or whatever is. A reference for where your tape will need to be.

That’s what I do. I use a silver or gold sharpie which is really easy to see against the black anodize. Everyone should have a silver sharpie for things like that. I use them for contrast marking all sorts of things.

Like every fastener on your sight, bow, rest, for witness marks.

Marking scope turrets, ocular’s, ring positions, etc... I put a big forward pointing arrow on top of the elevation turret at zero so with a simple glance you know where it’s at. Easy to remove or reapply when needed.

My issue is less about knowing exactly where the sticker needs to go and more about getting the sticker to cooperate and go to its home. Being so close to the end of the sticker at 20 on my Spot Hogg tapes tapes has always given me trouble. Sounds like its a me problem.

Unless you're super limited on range, no real reason you have to put it on with the sight set to 20yd. With my fast eddie I'll get the tape marks shot in and print a tape, shoot 40yd or so, lock the sight down and then install my tape with the pointer at 40. I figure that's more likely in the range I'll be shooting, so i might as well get that mark placed as accurate as I can in relation to the pointer.

The Boonie is even easier. I'll do the same process but once the sight is locked down I put a pencil mark on the rim of the wheel where the pointer is before i pull the wheel off. I line whatever yardage on my tape up with the pencil mark, stick it down and put the wheel back on. The holes on the wheel are slotted so you have some room to turn it and get it lined up perfect before you tighten the screws.
