I just signed up for a 25 yard appleseed course. It is basically free at $70 for a full day.

First, what are your thoughts/experience on the course?

Second, what rifle should I use? I have a 22 rimfire. I also have a Tikka 223 with a suppressor that is identical to my hunting rifle (7mm RM). I'm leaning towards the 223 since practicing is what I bought it for...

Do they even allow centerfire at appleseed? They have em at my local range pretty frequently and its been all rimfires.

I used to be an Appleseed instructor. You will find the "after the shot" feedback easier to pick up on with a rimfire. Centerfire does translate better to the "real world" as long as you are free from flinches and other accuracy robbing habits. Its great basic instruction that will benefit 90% of the shooting public.

Have fun!

I took the course a few years ago, and it was great.

When I took it, the stages were timed, so there was an advantage to a semi-auto. They used to have an "appleseed rifle", which was basically a Ruger 10/22 with M1 Garand style sights and a nylon sling. Most people at my course were using .22 semi-autos.

You'll go through a lot of ammo, so .22 will be more economical than .223.

This is based on old experience, so things may have changed since I took the course.

Would it be annoying to the others if I brought my 223? It will be suppressed. But will it be much louder than the other rifles?

For the distance, I would just use your 22 rimfire, but it's doable with your 223, so bring both.

I would say, “yes.” That’s based upon the Appleseed setups I have seen at my local range. Everyone will be wearing hearing protection, but even a suppressed bolt action .223 will almost certainly be the loudest thing there. And some poor soul will almost certainly not being wearing the hearing protection properly. For practice around novice shooters at 25 yards, I would bring .22 subsonic and my suppressed CZ 457.

Agreed that most folks will benefit from the course. I wouldn't worry about hurting people's ears... it's a shooting clinic.

My son and I had Marlin tube-fed .22's when we did it, which kinda sucked, since many of the exercises involve dropping and re-inserting mags, dry fires to fix flinch issues, etc. The tube-feds made this more difficult and time-consuming.

A guy was at our course shooting an AK... he was kinda beat up at the end, but no one seemed to care about noise.

Have fun!

This is a great course. Use your .22 lr. Make sure you have a sling that you like for positional shooting. I used the sling I would be using for hunting, not one just for the course. I used a .22 Browning bolt action rifle and that worked just fine for me.

This really is a great course. I saw a lot of progression in my standing and kneeling shooting. I think this course is almost better for fundamentals than NRL. Bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch etc. Bring extra mags so you don't have too much downtime reloading. I wore pants with knee pads and highly recommend.

Have fun!

I've done several 25m Appleseed events and one Rimfire Known Distance (KD) event.

I would never take my .223 to the 25m event simply because I don't want to pay for the ammo. You're going to drill a bunch and run the qual 2 or 3 times, the ammo adds up. Like @Q_Sertorius said, I think a suppressed CZ457 w/ subs is perfect for these events, but I'm biased for sure. I'd love clean both the 25m course and the KD course someday; I've gotten close but it hasn't happened yet.
