Up for sale is a set of brand-new in box Apex Optics 8x42 Summit ED binoculars. I won these at a PRS match but decided to stick with small form factor 8x32's to cover this magnification range for my needs. The retail price on these is $500, so I'm passing along a good deal and selling these for

$300 shipped

Apex Optics is a new brand to me so I didn't have a ton of familiarity with them initially. They are a Canadian optics company who is breaking into the competitive rifle scene with scopes and higher power spotting binos. This set is one of their more general purpose binos that could do double duty for hunting as well. The website describes them as:

Magnesium-alloy body, encased in rubberized carbon fiber appearance armor, Japanese Extra Low Dispersion (ED) lenses, proprietary HTX™ 7-Layer lens coating technology. Completely weatherproof, fog-proof, dust-proof, and waterproof rated to IP67 standard. Designed and tested in Canada, made in Japan.

I was curious so I took a peek through them to see how they stacked up against other optics. I was very pleasantly surprised. I looked through them on a tripod/sandbag back to back against cheap Vortex Crossfire 10x42's, Cabelas Euro HD (Meopta Meostar) 8x32, and Leica Geovid 10x42 HD-B rangefinding binos. For reference I also own Meopta Meostar HD 12x50, Swarovski 15x56 SLC, and have owned Viper HD binos in the past. The Apex's were head and shoulders above the Vortex, I had a hard time picking between the Euro HD/Meostars and the Apex, and they were not far off at all from the Leica's. The Apex actually seemed to hold sharpness farther out toward the edges than the Meopta 8x32's and had color/contrast that were equally as good. Depth of field was better with the Apex too. Based on recollection, they are as good or better than the Viper HD's I've owned in the past.

Now admittedly this is just a few minutes and first impressions, but my general reaction was... These things are nice and seem to punch above their price point. Not a full review, but I figure this info may help out someone wanting to get a good deal and try out something new.
