Anyone use standard primers in a short mag?

I have the latest Hornady manual and it lists a rem. 9.5 M primer for the 7 saum and WLRM primer for the 300 WSM, both magnum primers.

Not sure on powder given how hard it is to find anything. I have H4831sc and IMR4831 and H4350. Would like to find H1000. Still unsure on cartridge but 7SS or 7 SAUM probably. Maybe 300 WSM. Planning on a 20" barrel.

My 300 wsm, 7 SAUM, and 6.5 SAUM loads all use 210m primers and stick powders.

I found better velocity consistency with a couple loads 6 or 7 years ago doing this and haven’t tried a magnum primer in a short mag since. Not scientific but it has worked fine for me.

I only use cci br2 std primers in my 300wsm, mag primers seem to develop higher pressures with a lower grain load and no increase in velocity.

I've always used the old, 60 grains or more, or if it's a ball powder, use a magnum primer. Just a rule of thumb, not gospel.

All load data I’ve seen calls for a magnum primer but for my load

63.5 grn of h4831sc side by side testing large rifle primers shot much better than large rifle magnum primers. I started with magnum primers and couldn’t get the magnums to shoot better than 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Went back to the range with both primers loaded and shot them, the large primers yielded 1/2 inch groups instantly while the magnums couldn’t get under 3 inch groups.

I use different brands of primer than the manual calls for, but would not use a different style primer. Your pressure curve will not be the same. Toying around with pressure outside of what has been tested is for ammunition companies with engineers and a small population of serious wildcatters who really know what they are doing. I’ve been hand loading for over 30 years and don’t go beyond what manuals call for. That’s while using a chronograph… which I consider a must have for the handloader.

I’ve been told by serious Fclass shooters that BR2 work fine in short magnums. All has to do with the length of the powder column. I’m using them in my wsm running 200 eldx and Accurate 4350

Just a follow up since this got brought back up. A friend is using LR primers in his 338LM. They give him better accuracy. Not sure on velocity effects.

I use Fed 210, 63.2 grains IMR 4350 and 178 ELD-X in my 300 WSM and shoots lights out. Use the same recipe except H-4350 in my other 300 WSM and shoots the same.

I use a cci 250 in the 6.5 Remington mag IMR 4350
federal 215 with 748 in .308 win
30.06 federal 210 IMR 4350
revolvers all mag primers.
never know you might need a rifle or revolver in the deep freeze of winter.
I know which rifle to grab and any revolver.
