Have that engine in my wife’s Yukon. Sips the fuel...quiet. With an F-150 it will probably pull just fine to the limits of the chassis/brakes/trans.

The only thing that scared me off from it was the BELT driven oil pump with a 150k service interval.

To get to said belt, you have to take the transmission out. Not going to be easy to replace yourself, not gonna be cheap to have it replaced either.

Who the hell makes an oil pump belt driven anyhow.

Thanks!

Yes, I saw that on youtube, kind of crazy with the belt on the pump for sure. They must have had their reasons!! I wonder if its changed on the 2021 models? Thanks again!

The concept is like putting a million mile motor on a 100,000 mile truck. The HD models are HD because of the heavier duty parts that are stronger and built to last longer than your standard 1500 gasser components.
The belt driven oil pump is a playing w fire trick that was probably designed to get into production and to dealerships for sales.. No way will that be a lingering design.

The family biz had 4 Duramax HDs that did nothing but tow 4-8k lbs all day long. I’d echo the same concern above - not about the engine but the platform. We had zero issues with the HDs after hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles.

I have a couple clients that are Chevrolet dealers, I was interested in the same truck because I drive about 40,000 miles a year. For my driving both dealers said that the 3.0 diesel was a great truck and they would rather own true smaller diesel than owning the gasser in a half ton.

If your son is planning on using it for a grocery getter then I would lean for the gas half ton

Vandall, I hear you! It's hard to say what he'll do with it. He has a Chevy Duramax 3/4 ton at present, actually it's his 2nd one, he loves it! I think he just likes the looks of them & he's a diesel guy at heart. He wants to be able to tow his jet-boat with it if so desired so was curious of its power to do so with that smaller 3.0 -- He has too much money! (grin)

I am not sure how much 3.0 diesel tows, I do know it’s got a good amount of torque. They heaviest thing I tow is my small UTV.

If he’s got money to spend and likes the new body style then have at it. lol

You'd hope not. Most oil pumps are gear driven AFAIK, and it makes sense because without oil your engine is toast. How many guys are gonna be cruising down the road with a slipping belt, or worse, break a belt... by the time they get pulled over, which could take a minute on the interstate, they can suffer a massive amount of engine damage. I don't think duramax uses liners either, so that's a new block.

...looks like this one uses iron liners in an aluminum block, but nothing on if they're replaceable - hopefully they are. Either way, a rebuild isn't cheap, and its damn near guaranteed if the above happens.

I have had one in a GMC for 3 months and have no complaints. I had to take it into the shop with ~300 miles for a coolant dispersal module, but it was a fairly quick fix with what sounded to be an upgraded part they had on hand. I have averaged 25 mpg with combo of city and highway on a 4wd and longer bed config. I towed a Massey ferguson 135, 6' disc, on a 18' flatbed and 4 wheeler in the truck bed at 70 mph on the highway and got 16 mpg. I don't have any complaints, just hope the longevity as mentioned above is ok.

I looked into the belt/oil pan thoughts & it's really a non issue. I'd grab one of those diesels no problem if I was looking for that style. I have the gas ZR2 & really like it!

@ElkNut1 did this truck ever make it to the driveway?

I'm considering one myself. I would like to be able to pull my 8-9 k trailers with it in a pinch. The fuel mileage is mighty attractive.
