Looking for experience on a 20 inch 300. The lady wants a shorter rifle after having hike through willows on our moose hunts. Most shots will be under 500 yards. The last 2 years she got 2 bull moose at 350 yards with her 7 mag.

No but………

If you go short mag, like WSM, you would be cutting half an inch or so off the action, and adding similar to the effective barrel length.
Barrel length is measured bolt face to muzzle.

You could do a 21 or 22” short mag, gain more effective barrel length and end up with a similar total rifle length.
Could also toss in a folding stock and get more packable.

Chopping a long action mag isn't the best way in my estimation.

Yea, mine worked well. Went from 25” to 20.5” bartlein 3b and lost just over 100 fps. Suppressed, it’s got some recoil but enjoyable to shoot and didnt lose any accuracy. I switched to a magnum primer…just seemed to run a better sd after the chop.

I have a 20in 300WM and a 24.5in 300WM. I got it mid-season this fall and shot a bull with it. I have a suppressor on it as well.

We rebarreled my wife’s 4-5yrs ago and went with a 22in at that time. She is wanting to add a Scythe to it this winter.

I am a 300 fan and have a lifetime of components. That said, I hunted with a 7mag for a long time. My boy still uses it. As said above, I bet your current 7 would still knock animals down with a shorter barrel.

You’re in luck. I have a brand new, take-off Tikka 300 WM barrel available in the classifieds currently. Get it chopped and give it a shot.

Several dozen between 18”-20”.

What questions do you have?

Do you have any data on velocity from factory ammo? Specifically barnes or any all copper bullets? Do you find the noise levels and fireball worse than standard lengths? Ive been reading a bunch of conflicting stuff. Specifically planning on a tikka and I’m between a ss lite and the roughtech superlite but I’m not sure how it would be it being cut and threaded to the flutes.

Also thank you for all your testing you do

Yes, but not real recent. They all averages 20-30fps MV loss per inch however.

They are louder of course, but they are all loud without a suppressor. After used it first 20” 300WM, I never wanted longer.

The flutes are no issue. You can cute all the way into the flutes and thread them.

No problem.

Here's some 178 ELDX factory loads run through a 20" Superlite. I had no problem getting 2950 with 180 Berger handloads. I'm finishing up some 168's with Varget that I might run through today. I'll post those if you're interested.

I've got an APA brake on this rifle. Very mild recoil. Tried it with the UM brake for my TBAC supressor, and there was a noticeable difference in recoil.

I shoot it a lot, so went back with the APA.

I cut a Tikka factory 300WM barrel from 24.3" to 20" and it lost right at 100fps with 180gr Accubonds, to 2900fps. Will never have a barrel over 20" again.

If I ever put my 300WM back into rotation I will have it cut to 22, or down to 18 or 20 and suppress it.

Awesome, can you post a photo of the rifle? I’m interested to see how it looks cut to the flutes

That’s cool. I had my CF barrel made to 22” because I thought 20” was going to be too short for a mag. Following for all the experiences. I might be cutting my factory in the future.

A 20" 300 win mag, interesting. I would like to really see some data on "factory loads" using one of these. Would I have to run a can on it?

OP, the wife, DBevans, "The lady wants a shorter rifle after having hike through willows on our moose hunts." Is it for hiking? Have you thought of a XLR magnesium chassis with a folding stock?

Here's a pic from the 2023 season. Different setup now, and I much prefer a bigger brake. I'll have it at the range in a bit and grab another
