Anyone gone down from 10x binos and liked it?

I have a good kowa 77m spotter and often wonder if some good 8 or 9x binos wouldn't be more beneficial than my 10x vortex vipers? Has anyone really seen a benefit of going down in magnification? I also considering swapping the spotter for the maven 18s when they come out as I rarely glass over a 1.5mi and 2 eyes is always more enjoyable.

Interested to see the responses. I just purchased a set of 8x swaros after using 10x Vipers for the past 5 years. No field experience with them yet, but what I’m gaining in clarity is going to outweigh anything I’m losing in reach.

I went down in magnification but up in glass quality. I went from 10x42 Vortex Diamondback to 8x42 Meopta Meopro's and I've loved the change. The 8x are way more stable for me to look through and are better in lowlight as well

I rediscovered a pair of leupold 7x binoculars that I had bought over 25 years ago. I used them daily this past year for white tail and really enjoyed them. Great field of view and extremely helpful in the woods judging bucks. I still use my 10x when I go out west for glassing elk but in relatively thick timber those 7x are about perfect for me.

This is a timely topic...I’ve been using 10x Vipers for a bunch of years and used them nonstop recently in Kenya...but felt they were a bit too much (weight and power) after hiking and with no tripod to help steady. I’ve been gawking after the Leica ultravid 8x32 and in retrospect, they would probably have been perfect.

i use 8x32 maven b3. field of view, clarity, weight and stability are great. i bring a small spotter (11-33 razor) when hunting bigger mtns with long distance glassing but for a mile or so these work great. i don't miss my 10x in the least and these are brighter to my eye than any of my higher power large objectives binos.

use a tripod if you want to get really stabilized and see more critters.

Yes. I sold my conquest 10x42s and now run maven b3 8x30s on my chest. Only had a chance to turkey hunt with them so far but it was the right move. With 8x I am steady enough hand holding them to pick up movement of animals which is huge. I will day that for serious glassing I also have Leica 10/15x50s on a tripod. If the terrain is open I would bring just those but any kind of timber and the 8x30s are on my chest.

Dropped from Vipers in a 10x to Leupolds in a 8x and haven’t missed a thing. Steadier in the hand and better field of view.

Went from 8x Diamondbacks to 10x Diamondbacks, to 9x Maven B2s now. I couldn’t be happier with the 9s, but the 8s worked well for me for many years. Only ran the 10s one season and wasn’t thrilled.

Yep, but increased quality. Vortex 10x42 to swaro 8x32 EL’s. Been running them exclusively for about 3 years now. Perfect for archery/timber hunting. Just bought some 10x42 SLC’s tho as all my tags this year will be in wide open country requiring much more longer distance glassing with a tripod. FOV isn’t as big of a benefit as magnification in those settings for me.

10x Europeans will give you approx. 330' FOV at 1000, that's always been plenty of FOV for me ?

I've been using a Meostar 8x56 as a house binocular. I've found it easier to hold steadily than my 10x glass. The Meostar is too heavy to use as a hunting binocular.

Yes. I have some 10x vipers and added Swaro 8x30 CLs. I much prefer the CLs. Much easier to hold and be steady when viewing through the timber. I will pair them with a light spotter for hunts out west.

I think there is room for both in a hunters collection

I posted earlier that I love 7/8x for its benefits

But 10x with a tripod is the great compromise that can accomplish almost everything, even though it doesn’t master them.

If your traveling with just one optic and looking long distance (miles) but still want handholding capabilities. 10x might be the right option

Most of us have multiple guns for different use, I think optics are the same way

Thats coming from a minimalist and ultra light hiker like myself.

This is essentially what I started the 8x vs 10x thread about. I ran 10's for the longest time, but am now pretty dedicated to my 8's as a daily driver. There are a few situations where I might prefer 10's, but not many where I wouldn't just use my little Nikon spotter anyway.

You want to throw a monkey wrench in that set up! Get yourself a nice set of 15/16x binoculars and you will start questioning why use the Nikon ED 50 when You can have the benefits of two eyed viewing
