Anyone ever hunt with Davis Outfitters out of Dillingham, AK

Anyone else who has hunted with Gabe in the last few years care to share some info? I'm booking a self guided moose hunt for 2025. Thanks. Ed F

A buddy and myself are also booked for 2025 DIY!

Gabe seems like a humble, down to earth guy.

Ed, How did your DIY moose hunt go? Sure miss the old days hunting bou in the 40 Mile country.

Personally, I would recommend against going with him. I previously worked for Gabe at Davis Outfitters. Not only did I have to formally complain to the Commercial Big Game Services Board to be paid, but I was witness to multiple instances of running afoul of fish and game regulations. He also told one of my hunters that he wasn’t going to let him keep all of his meat as he’d already promised to “donate” it elsewhere.

He generally treats his clients well and he’s hunting in an area with many, large moose. However, he treated me VERY poorly. Another person working for him that year never did get paid either, though they didn’t make the formal complaint I did. I won’t ever associate myself with Davis Outfitters again.

I also went moose hunting with him. Paid a bunch of money and he wasn’t great to hunt with. I killed. But he only cared about money and getting me in and out. I had a great time in Alaska. But not a guide service I would go back with. I was an inconvenience to him. He was so busy flyin people and pickin up people and moose as an air taxi, that he wasn’t concerned with his client. He is not your guide. He says all his guides are local. Not true. He had a guy from Finland and like Michigan other guide moved there from Kentucky. Doesn’t care about getting you all your meat back. And sent my antlers back with Brains and all in my skull cap rottted by the time it made it back. I’ve went on quite a few guided hunts. First bad experience with a guy who don’t care.
I read here and only seen good things about him. He is convincing on the phone and sounds like he knows what he’s talking about, that’s the one reason I chose him. Again. Just telling my experience. I had a good time in Alaska. But the guide service could have been much better. Second I was flown back I had to figure out how to get everything back. 0 communication after I returned. He was ready to go to Canada and see his mom then go hang out in Florida. Maybe I caught the guy at a bad time in his career. But it wasn’t what I was hoping for.
I paid for a fully guided 1 on 1 hunt. I was after a trophy bull.
My guide he sent with me had never killed a moose. But hunted a lot of bear with him.
I spotted every bull the whole trip. I had never hunted moose before.
I was frustrated I killed a bull barely legal 50 52 inches
I didn’t have the experience to judge them. Neither did my guide.
I was told we would have everything, I asked about sleepin pads and all. He told me he provided them. It was 1/2 inch foam mat, if id know little things I would have brought some basic comforts like a sleepin pad. lol
Food was fair at best. Mountain house. And some frozen food.
I would have brought better things if I would have known.
Second I stepped on the plane he didn’t even want you to touch the door handles on the aircraft.
When I was dropped off at end of the Hunt he told me he would come bring me to the airport. I had to call to remind him to pick me up. He asked if I could get the shuttle. Had he told me the day before I needed to arrange the shuttle that would have been no big deal but he told me he would take me. I guess he forgot he was gonna come and get me. He showed up with about 30 minute left for me to board and check all guns and bags in. So it ended with me having the same service as the second I met him. Just put out and rude. So that was my hunt. Love Alaska, went to a beautiful place. Killed a small bull. Will definely go back. Just not with the same guy.

I thought I must have been on crazy pills after my time with him and then seeing his outfit talked up on here.

Funnily enough, I know exactly the guides you’re talking about. The fellow from Michigan is pretty good, but the Finnish guy (he’s actually from an Amish family in the Midwest originally)is very new to hunting and Alaska. Decent guy, but Gabe used him as a handyman at his main property and cabin a whole lot more than he actually trained him on guiding.

If you’re looking to take a stab at moose again I could suggest a couple of really good outfits that would make sure you get it done right this time.

The guy is absolutely insufferable and I'd hardly consider him to be a functional adult. Im surprised he can keep his pilots license.
