Anyone carry a Rock Island Ultra FS HC 10mm?

I hunt in Grizzly country and carry a Taurus Tracker .44mag. I bought that gun mostly because it was cheap and generally a great dangerous game round. However I would really like to switch to a high capacity 10mm. I'm a big fan of 1911s, love my Colt Gold Cup Trophy, but excluded them with the single stack mag until I found the Ultra 10mm. just curious how people are like it as a woods gun.

Edit: Would really like to know how well it cycles 220gr hard cast rounds.

I have the rock island tac ultra ms. Really like the gun. It only holds 8+1 rounds I believe. Its the single stack version. Its a great little gun and it shoots really well. Needed a little trigger stoning to get it to what I would consider acceptable creep and crispness standards.

However, As much as it pains me to say this.

In a back country rig there is nothing that the rock island can do that the Glock G20 can't do with more capacity, lighter and quite frankly less pucker factor. Use my G20 as a hammer, no problem, drop it in the river, I dont care, buried in the mud, sure no problem. Try those things with one of my 1911's and my butt will pucker up enough to crack a walnut.

Thanks, the g20 or g40 was actually where I was leaning towards. I just have a love for 1911s but I also don’t like a thumb safety for a carry gun. The .44 is fine but 15+1 rounds is mighty appealing.

buy both. I did. I don't like having just one of a particular pistol caliber. The rock island is a nicer gun IMO. Just not what I would want to abuse on a pack belt.

I ditched my 4.2” Redhawk 44 for an RIA Ultra FS. Even after 1500rds training with the 44 I could still get a magful of rounds from draw to target under stress with the 1911 platform as fast as I could get 2-3 on target well with the big revo.
Mine is loaded with 200gr WFNGC’s (double tap) that I load over Longshot for 1200fps.
I haven’t (and probably won’t be) played with 220’s. I run 180XTP’s at 1300fps most of the time (AZ, so I’m more worried about lions than bears, our bears aren’t brown).

Glocks are solid, I just don’t shoot them instinctively well compared to a 1911.

Sorry, I didn’t see the HC, mines a single stack. I did run a hicap Para as a Ltd Steel gun, and have no issues switching single stack to high cap.

That’s the way I feel sort of with the Taurus, and I know there are much much nicer revolvers out there, but that first double action shot seems pretty clunky and slow out of the gate. Plus with a .44 I don’t necessarily feel like practicing a lot and have my hand punished a bunch.

I haven’t even shot a glock, just held them and they do feel much less ergonomic than a 1911. 1911s feel like they were molded to a hand sort of.

No worries, I believe the only real difference is a thicker grip with the double stack mag

I've been considering the rock island 10mm as well. I have been hunting with a taurus raging bull 454 for years but would like to have the 10mm as a back up. I also have a rock island 22tcm double stack that has been flawless since day one. Not the best 1911 trigger but better than any factory glock.

I grew up shooting compitions with 1911’s my daily cary is a springfield 911.
What i found after buying a glock was in Stressful situations (created by me) im faster and more effective with any 1911 model then i am with the glock on getting on target and squeezing rounds off accurately. Now i dont hunt where bears are and i dont carry my gun miles and miles.
I just find it interesting how hard it is to make yourself learn a new firearm. I pratice with a xdm all the time so i can compete in anew division. It sure is weird.
