In the need of installing an underground fence for my dog. (Belgian malinois 55lb) had an incident at the farm with him getting to an alpaca. After a year of him paying zero attention to them, he got to a cria. 🤬 Got through a gate into the dry lot. Anyways, I’m looking for a good quality diy system. He is ecollar trained so I’m not concerned with him “not getting it”. Durable collar strong stimulation is my biggest concerns. Currently looking at dogtra, ecollar tech., and sport dog system. Any help is greatly appreciated

I can't help you with the underground fence as I've never used one. My friends and family that have used them have all said the dog always learns how to beat it. Idk. Just what I heard.

I had issues with my dogs getting out and off of my property. I spent $130 putting hot wire fence on my property and I have not had my dogs get passed it since.

Recommend saving yourself some work and look into the wireless/WiF perimeter collar options. Do your due diligence, but it’s an immediate solution, especially if your dog is collar trained.

We have a PetSafe wireless fence, it just makes a perimeter from the transmitter in a circle. We have set it to the max at 90' which is a 180' circle around the house. They cannot run across it like at buried wire fence and it worked great with our dog. She eventually learned the perimeter and doesn't need the collar any longer.

I was told that the wireless systems won’t work on moderate sloped property which is a concern. Is your property sloped

I installed a sport dog system that we picked up at Rural King, it covers about 1.25 acres for our pup and have not had an issue with it.

I wish the neighbors would get something...

Have the PetSafe wireless and it worked well for our dog. Always had a fenced yard and new place didn’t have a fence in front near the road. Fastest and easiest solution. Also, I think there are 5 levels if I remember and I put it on level three and it was to strong for mine so dropped it down to level 2. I think they also make a stronger version than the basic one for less sensitive dogs. It gives them an audible warning firs to let them know if they keep going then they will get a shock. My dog learned pretty fast and knows the exact boundaries even when he doesn’t have the collar on.

We have a PetSafe in ground fence. Used a edger to install and it went pretty smooth. Also have about an acre fenced in. No issues keeping our 100 lb lab in

I have around 4 acers covered with the invisible fence. Works as designed, but dogs must be trained or it will not work.

I've used a wired system. If you have pocket gophers it won't last and finding the line break is a pain.

I bit the bullet on cost and got a wireless gps system, Invisible Fence,(not a wifi circular system) that works well on 20 acres.

Some buddies and I installed Spot Dog systems at all of our homes. We went and rented a trencher that also lays the wire and just knocked out all our places in one day. One recommendation is if you live where you get a deeper frost with freeze/thaw cycle, upgrade your wire to a thicker gauge copper for more durability. I've got the system with rechargeable collars and with one charge, both of my collars can run well over a month and a half.
I've never tested how long a charge will last though.

I’ve had one sport dog and two invisible fence systems on three different pieces of property. With training they work as expected. I guided upland hunts for the last 10 years, my shorthairs were hard chargers but none ever escaped. Just moved to a new 9 acre place over the summer. The sport dog system was overlooked in the barn. New folks love it. We went with invisible fences satellite gps system, terrain issues.
Works great.

I installed a Sport Dog system this past summer. Rigged this subsoiler attachment up to bury the wire out of stuff I had laying around the shop. Worked awesome.

I have zero complaints so far and Sport Dog has great CS.

I’ve got an eXtreme Dog Fence, bought the heavy duty wire for it. Had a sport dog fence at a previous house with the cheaper wire that comes with it. Figured that if I was going through the effort of digging it in the better wire was worth it. Just dug it in with a shovel, cut a narrow slot and shoved the wire in, had to cross my driveway and did that with a circular saw and a diamond blade.

They’ve both worked good, my pup was getting out and chasing the neighbors chickens and ducks, tough to stop with a bird dog. Since I put the fence in she hasn’t gotten out once, it’s been great.

Sport dog for my German Shorthair. I did about 10 acres total & it works great. Like others have mentioned, go ahead & upgrade the wire size while you're installing it. Do 14 ga min

Get the Sportdog transmitter box SDF-1, $130 bucks on average. Use #14 low voltage SOLID copper wire. You can normally find 1000ft for around $100. Use the Petsafe Deluxe In-Ground UltraLight collar, it has 5 levels of shock. Its around $85 at TSC. Once the dog is fully trained and KNOWS where the boundry is, do away with the warning zone. So after the dog knows its limit it will not start testing the boundary!

Sorry for the late reply, looks like you've decided on a fence. But if you're still wondering our yard is sloped and is actually kind of tri-level, and it still works perfect. Out front lawn is about 15' lower than the front door of the house and that was the place we needed to keep her close and had no issues. Best of luck, and the key to getting ours to work great was a bit of training from the beginning of using the fence.
