Any market value in an Argali sheep mount?

A buddy of mine was gifted a pretty large Argali shoulder mount and he was wondering if it was worth anything. So, does anybody know if there is a market for this kind of thing? Obviously, if there is a market, size matters and I'll have him get some good pictures and measurements for a score, but just thought I'd ask here first to see if anybody had any good insight into this.

I’ve seen folks sell deer mounts at gun shows in the lower 48. Maybe 25 cents in the dollar. Maybe.

Someday I’ll get rid of 3 I’d never shoot today, but I think a gun club or restaurant of some sort and a donation is route I’d go.

A good mount can bring good money. Deer mounts are a dime a dozen. Argali mounts would be worth more due to scarcity.

Ya an argali sheep should be worth decent money. Even really big deer, elk etc get pretty good money if they are decent mounts. Average whitetail mount not worth much but there’s a lot of price difference depending on the qualityOf the animal and mount. You should post pictures

I sold a coyote mount for 4 times the cost I paid to have it mounted. Asian dude hounded me for years for it and I finally told him an amount and he said he would take it. I think you will be surprised what that mount will bring.

It really depends on the argali species and the age. Some argalis aren’t importable anymore so they would obviously be more valuable. If it’s ”just” a Hume or Marco Polo then it wouldn’t be anymore valuable then a dall sheep mount. If it’s an Altai or Gobi then it could be worth serious money. Either way, let’s see some pics!!!

They've got decent Dall sheep mounts at $1750 and a Kuban tur mount at $1000 just to give you an idea of what that kind of stuff sells for. In my experience, it’s a lot less then what you think but then again, it’s all about finding the right buyer.

The taxidermy quality of the first site is why the prices are so low. Big difference in prices depending on the quality of the work and the trophy quality of animal. Second site has wolf for 11,009 and a stone for 11 or 12000. I’m adding up the value of my mounts as we speak! Going to be living large 😂! Bobcat tanned was 250 and I think they are averaging that raw right now. Haven’t sold any yet this year and never sold 1 tanned but I figured tanned would add a few hundred To the prices ? I was going to tan a few this year to keep but maybe I should just sell?

Yeah I posted those links to show that pricing is all over everywhere depending on animal quality as well as taxidermy quality.

How do you tell if it's an Altai, Gobi, Marco Polo, or Hume? I'll have him take some pictures tonight and I'll post them up tomorrow.

It will be pretty easy to tell from pics. Do you know what country it came from? The argalis are geographically isolated from each other which is what caused their speciation so that if you know what country or mountain range, that will tell you. Most folks will call any whitish argali a Marco Polo but true poli subspecies are from Tajikistan. Hume argalis will be whitish usually but generally come from Kyrgyzstan. Altai and Gobi are Mongolian subspecies and they will be obviously heavier horned and darker caped (thin hair as well).
Think thin horns vs big horns for comparison purposes. Mongolian sheep are heavy horned while “Stan” sheep are thinner horned.

Here’s a few pictures. Crudely measures 53” and 54” with 18” and 18.5” bases. Taken in 1971 in Mongolia he thinks.

Aren’t there poli species rams on the border of China and Pakistan? Seems like I remember reading about some dipshit gunning down like 12 of them while his guides watched out for chinese patrol soldiers. Would have been in the 1950s/60s

That’s very cool. I normally wouldn’t want a mount of an animal I didn’t shoot but I’d make an exception for one of those.

Looks like a Gobi argali. If it is from the 70’s, it’s really priceless. Something I’ve dreamed about hunting since I read McElroy hunts Asia when I was a kid. There weren’t very many Americans hunting over there back then. Very cool!

Yeah I remember that story as well. Poli subspecies will run all through the Pamirs which are right where you’re talking about in the Walken corridor.

Interesting thanks, those things really are the pinnacle of hunting in my opinion.

Yessir and what’s crazy to me is you can still hunt Marco Polo and Hume argalis for less than a Stone sheep and have one hell of an adventure.
