My dad and I are planning a trip to hunt either unit 62 or 74 this October for 2nd rifle season with OTC bull tags. We're from Indiana and have never been elk hunting before but my dad has been on some bear hunts in Montana. Any helpful advice anyone could give us would be great. I'm not asking for anyone's honey-holes or deal breaker tactics, just a little advice from fellow hunters.

Do not plan on hunting 62. There is still a large fire burning there, the Bull draw fire. All the bow hunters were told to leave there earlier .

You should have been planning this all summer, kind of late now. Just bring your tire chains and hope for the best.

Half of 74 was on fire this summer and so it’s closed to everyone. Actively patrolled by the forest services and CPW. Pretty stiff fines if you’re caught. The northern half of 74 is pretty crowded between hunters, hikers, and bikers. However, there’s still critters in there. 2d rifle is an otc unit so expect a lot of folks.

We've been planning for most of the summer. Had not heard of the fire. Thank you for the info

A lot of fires have been going on here all summer, all over. Some will not be out till we get significant rain or snow.

Google Colorado fire maps and plan accordingly
