For Wyoming I would hunt the type 6 tag (reduced cow) and learn the unit real well. Then put in for the type 1 when you have enough points. Just because a unit requires 7 or more PP for a non-res to get drawn, doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy hunt.

Good luck with this tactic. Sure it worked in the past, now even cow/calf tags are getting hard to get.
Happened to me last year. Totally blew me away how many more people applied for RP cow/calf tags from prior years.

Just looked up the unit we hunted in 2017. If my memory is correct the NR type 6 draw odds were around 60-70%. Now the 2018 draw odds are at 35%.

Dang, you’re right cnelk.

I would imagine the draw odds for Wyoming cow tags going down may be partly due to threads on Rokslide and Hunttalk suggesting exactly what mitchell is. It seems like every thread on HT regarding Wyoming elk ends up with someone suggesting this and everyone agreeing it's a great idea. I'm not criticizing or anything it's just an observation.

True story, I actually first heard about this website from helping out some out of state guys a couple years ago. I didn't get any cheese out of the deal tho haha. Its getting a lot harder for in state guys to get the cow tags now too, at least where I hunt. The extra late season pressure is definitely affecting how the elk behave. They drop down onto the private ranches much earlier now and wait out the orange storm.

Another WI guy here, as the others have said OTC is the way to go while building points. CO produces some great bulls you just have to work for them a little harder in some of the OTC units. I have heard good things out of Montana OTC as well just haven't experienced it there. Don't waste your time and money with a guide; big risk=big reward!

Another Wisconsin guy, I’m in a very similar situation and trying to draw Wyoming in the general random draw with one point, I’ll put in for a couple New Mexico units with better (relatively) odds, a unit in CO that I have a chance at drawing with 0 points (used my points last year) and then backup is OTC.

One of the few things everybody seem to agree on here is that you need to do is get out and hunt!

Good luck!!

No 1 pt draw in WY. You will likely need 3 this year for a general tag.
