Another guy from Wisconsin wondering where to hunt

I hunted a second rifle tag in unit 45 Colorado with an outfitter in 2016 and didn’t see an elk. :( Myself and a couple of friends are going Elk hunting this year and we are seeking guidance. We all have 1 pt in Wyoming and Montana. Are we better off going OTC anywhere or is there a beneficial 1 pt draw tag somewhere? Any input or advice is appreciated. If you want to tell me your honey hole, I’ll listen. ;)

Hey man. From WI as well. Where abouts are you from?

Don't put too much pressure on yourselves. Also quit with paying the guide service! Living in WI my whole life, harvesting whitetails is a gimmie compared to these elk! I don't think 1 point is necessarily going to make things easier. I would just keep building up your points so that when you do decide to turn them in you will have a few years under your belt. From the units that interest me in WY, I need 3-5 points.

I just turned 40 and have spent almost 30 years perched in a tree hunting whitetails. For me it is such an awesome adventure to be out there in the mountains that I'm about to put all of my hunting tokens into hunting out west. It takes some guys years to harvest an elk so I'd say just enjoy the adventure it brings and success will come.

If you boys are looking for a 4th let me know as I will likely be heading out to montana 2x this year.

There is a lot of hunting and potential harvesting to be had on a montana combo license.

Also from Wisconsin. OTC is the way to go while you build points. Did 15 days in the back country Archery last year with a friend. He has been hunting out west for several years and this was my first. We both should have had Elk but couldn’t shoot. I wouldn’t bother with any outfitters if I was you. Just get yourself into great shape and make it happen. Good luck, I will be following to see what other answers you get.

Park falls wi here. I hunted close to 45 this year otc 2nd rifle and seen a bunch of elk on private ranch lands and tracks up higher in the public. I suggest getting higher and further in than most guys and youll find elk. Start at 10k and go from there

I always used to see lots of guys from Wisconsin in the Flat Tops. And then I met a couple guys from Wisconsin this year camping near me in a different part of the state, and they were telling me about some other Wisconsin hunter that came through and they even exchanged cheeses. Can't say I've ever taken cheese on a hunt before, but I guess that's a staple for WI folks.

I can say that I will not be packing cheese into the backcountry. I live here and don’t eat very much in the first place.

What is wrong with you man!?!?

I used to hear tales of old hunters bringing landowner's cheese.

Try to grab a cow/calf tag in an area in Wyoming you can hunt general with 2-3 PP's. Come out an learn it and take home a nice fat cow for cheaper.
I'll recommend some areas for a wheel of cheese.

There are elk in all over in CO, that being said they can be tough to hunt due to high pressure but they are still there. This year we archery hunted a new unit and there were A LOT of hunters in the area likely because the fires pushed them out of their traditional hunting grounds. We did find the elk eventually and enjoyed the hunt.
My advice is to cover a lot of ground until you find fresh sign or gear bugling. There was a big herd just a short 1-1/4mile walk across an open ridgetop from a heavily used hiking trail and 3 or 4 spike camps. Figure out where other hunters are going and go in a different direction....that has worked for my group in past years.

You may want to split a membership to GoHunt with your buddies. It puts all the info in one place and you can make a good decision for your trip.

In 2008 my father took me out to Wyoming on a mule deer hunt and we brought cheese as a trade of sorts for some information from the locals...shot my first muley buck that year.

Never underestimate a Wisconsin cheddar :)

You need to reconsider! :p Cheese is awesome in the backcountry: high calorie per ounce, high fat, good source of protein, few carbs.

With only 1 point I would plan on continuing to build points and go OTC or hunt a general tag. 1 point isn't likely to get you a game-changing better hunt. I would take a good hard look at Idaho or better yet a Montana general tag. Best of luck and GPG! (next season of course:rolleyes:)
