I sometimes miss the sound when hunting in trees, close quarters. In open spaces it's unmistakable. You can also tell the difference between a hit in the vitals or a hit in the paunch. Very different sound, hollow vs a solid hit.
I will add, the last animal I shot suppressed was in a tight wooded area. The impact was clean with no keyhole but I hear a ricochet sound instead of the body hit. I was almost convinced I missed as the herd busted out. I always check for blood and found a cow elk slid downhill from it. She never took a step.
