I’ve tried to figure out why I hear it sometimes and don’t hear it others. It wasn’t until this past weekend that I may have figured out why.
Shooting a 6.5 GAP with 156 Bergers suppressed. The first shot of the morning was a coyote at 200 yards standing in an open field. The bullet impact was so loud that it echoed more than the shot. My next two shots were from the same spot but shooting into thick woods. Neither of these did I hear and bullet impact, just sonic crack. The first deer disappeared at the shot and it sounded like a miss. The second shot (2nd deer) again sounded like a miss and the deer ran into the thick brush. I was a bit confused and annoyed that I could have missed two easy shots when just hit a coyote at the same distance. As it turn out, both bullet hit exactly where I was aiming and I had two dead deer. This, and other similar instances, leads me to believe that it has to do with what sound has to bounce off of. The shot on the coyote in the open field had very little sonic crack, just the impact. The two shots into the woods had very loud sonic crack and I think it masked the impact sound. Thinking back, this might explain why we hear some impacts and not others. Simply, what is around to block one sound or amplify another. I think about shooting steel and how a piece of steel set back in a wooded area doesn’t have nearly the report as if it were set in the open.

I’ve heard the thwap on 70-80% of mine, it’s absolutely a thing. However never heard it on the 15 - 20 mono kills

Yes, very distinct. Tha-whack, not crack. Think environmentals play they biggest part. Very noticeable with coyotes on the snow covered prairie.

Definitely something that once you hear it, its more distinct afterwards. I would also add that I find it easier to hear on longer shots and anything sub 100 yards I never hear it.

The 147 eldm impact is the one I consistently hear no matter what the distance. 100-630 so far.

108 eldm at 100 suppressed this year I for sure heard. Almost all my suppressed shots I hear animal impact. I’ve heard it with bare muzzle rifles as well at distance (250ish +) but much less so. Weirdest sound I heard was on a lung shot buck, where the impact had a “twang” to it almost. Normally I hear the sound like the 2 vids posted.

The times I've noticed it, it sounded similar to the noise of an arrow hitting a deer. I was always surprised by how loud that is.

My buddy caught a video of two shots on a bull about 100yards. Fairly open between us and the bull but uphill and there is no noticeable thwack sound to either impact - this was an 95gr HHT hammer.

Picking up sounds, especially the types of sounds firearms and bullet impacts make, can vary wildly based on the recording device and environmental factors. I would not say as a statement of fact that if you can't hear it in a video that it didn't happen.

I’ve shot multiple animals, and see multiple shot. Only ever heard it twice. Mulie at 225 and Mulie at 100 yards, that one I hit bone. Definitely heard both impacts. Barnes 180 tsx 300wsm.

Agree. I find the quality of sound a phone records around gunshots is always much different and the microphones seem to be prone to being overwhelmed.

I have heard it on every deer i have ever shot. From being little thats one thing my dad always told me to listen for. Maybe being out in the open prairie helps with it

Prior to hunting with a suppressor, the only time I heard that satisfying “thump/thunk” sound was with a .45-70 at close to 150 yards. Since starting to hunt with a suppressor, I hear it all the time (relatively small sample size of six, all between 25 and 200 yards).

Before I started hunting suppressed I could never hear it on my own animas but could tell if someone in the distance made contact. Hunting suppressed I hear it every time. Sounds like hitting a wet rug with a baseball bat.

Some impact locations are louder than others (contacting head/shoulder/bone vs between the ribs)

Its similar to the sound a pumpkin makes when you slap it. Like a hollow thump. Lol
