I have heard plenty of people say they hear bullets impact an animal they have shot with a rifle, but I have never heard this noise on any animal I have shot or any animal someone else shot while I was there. About half or more were with a suppressor and no ear protection. I imagine ear protection would prevent hearing the impact? Ranges between 50-425yards and includes a variety of big game species - also assume too far and you wouldn’t hear it in any situation.

However - every single kill including the ones shot by my hunting partners have been with mono copper bullets of some type and I got wondering if maybe they don’t make the same impact noise? Does anyone have any comparison or insight to that?

I have never not heard it but i have never used monos so might be something in that.
Closest was a mate with a ttsx still heard that one but want asmuch of a solid thud as with the lead never really thought about it to be fair but we did loose that deer.

I’ve heard it on pretty much every animal I’ve shot or been around that have been shot near or far. Even smaller animals like coyotes and rockchucks

I have heard it more in open areas than when in tighter cover or cross canyon type areas. I figured it has something to do with the sound bouncing off features back to me covering the impact sound.

I hunt with electronic ear muffs on. Last deer I shot Id almost swear I heard a very distinct whack sound immediately after the kaboom that kinda rang out for a while. I did hit a rib right square in the center on the entrance side.

Im saying thats what the noise was because if nothing else it makes for a cool story.

I've heard it! It's a wonderful sound! Everything from antelope to elk with .223 up to 300s.

I usually describe it as the sound of hitting a 100lb watermelon as hard as you can with a baseball bat.🥰

270 - 130sst - 2700ish impact on a buck about 230 yards away across the canyon. I remember hearing it to this day, still makes me smile.
