Consumer debt was definitely a problem before the internet was a thing. Credit cards are a big contributing factor. Combining credit cards with being able to order whatever you can think of from the couch makes it worse. Now add in social media, where people we follow and trust recommend products we didn't even know we needed, and here's a link to buy it right now....
If we're doing analogies, I'd say being able to buy stuff on your phone with a couple taps and have it delivered to your door is more like having a big bowl of candy/unlimited food with you wherever you go. Some people would be disciplined enough to use that properly and avoid eating too much, but many of us are not.
