Another vote for the Kennetrek extreme 400. I get cold feet easily and once the snow flies these are my current choice. Good ankle support for worn ankles, providing good support when sidehilling on slick stuff, comfortable with a limited breakin period from my experience. Pac style boots were my choice when young when cold they just don't provide enough support at this stage of my life for a long day on the mountain when in snow.

Hell Ross, you dont spend many long days on the mountain; do yuh? :D

I agree with the "no such thing" replies. I get by with uninsulated Kenetrek Mountain Extremes for almost all non-snow conditions (it has to be pretty cold and a lot of sitting around for me to wear my 400g insulated Kenetreks). If I am in more than a couple inches of snow I really dislike all leather boots and therefore switch to Schnee's pac boots, although I don't really like hiking in them much. While the Kenetreks don't leak, they do get cold from soaked, frozen leather and sweaty feet. The rubber pac boots keep my feet more comfortable in those conditions, and when it is REALLY cold.

I agree with Gumbo - In most all of the discussions re: boots, these conditions are seldom mentioned - White's is another great Pac Boot source but the bottom line is, Pac Boots have their rightful place in a well outfitted hunter's gearbox

I was leaning toward the hunter II pac boots, but now I may look back at the schnees beartooth. I like the ankle support that's provided by the mountain boot, but still want the warmth of the pac boot. Decisions decisions

I have had the beartooths for four years and love them. Have hunted elk in October at elevation and birds in snow and they have never faulted. If your worries about warmth give the Granites a shot. Big Schnees fan here.

As much as I like the warmth and comfort of my Kenetrek Grizzly pac's, I don't think I would want to try to wear them if climbing is on the agenda...which it normally is hunting elk out west. Hunting the hills and flat lands where I usually hunt deer I have no issues with the fact that pac's usually don't provide as much support and can get heavy by the end of a long day. But, not a bad trade-out for the added warmth they provide.

I wear Kenetrek Mountain Extremes NI and am find as long as I'm moving. It snowed about 10" on our hunt this year and about 4 hours was as long as I could sit still before starting to get cold feet. My buddy had boot issues and had to buy some during our trip. He bought Kenetrek 13" Grizzlies and loved them. We were covering a lot of elevation during our hunt and he said they were the best boots he ever had.

I would look at hoffmans packs as well. all my co workers in the timber industry use them. personally i use their outback packs which have an ankle locking system i like. the rubber bottoms are sourced from finland and are the best made i believe. whites have been junk from what ive seen in the last 5 or so years. not the boots they used to be. they are owned by a Japanese or Chinese company now

I have been using the same pair of Hoffman's for about 16 years now. I'm long past needing to replace them though. I've thought about trying Kenetrek or Schnee's, but the price of Hoffman's has me thinking I'll get another pair from them. I've used them for all my winter time activities: Hunting, ice fishing, sledding (the motorized kind) and work. They've treated me pretty well.

I also own the Salomon Quest boot that you own. I really like them for early season archery elk hunting. When I start running into wet and snowy weather, I switch over to my Lowa Tibet GTX boot. It is a little heavier boot, but it is the best boot that I own. It's a comfort issue for me though. I have to have a wide boot and the wide Lowa boot fits my feet extremely well, where as the Asolo and Meindl boots I have, don't fit as well. I haven't gotten a black toe nail since wearing the Lowa and I have put a ton of down-hill miles on since owning them. I have had no issue with wet feet with the Lowa either.

Anybody have a weigh in on Hanwag Alaska winter? Is 400gms insulation adequate?

I haven't worn pacs for about 5 years now but I used to wear White's every time it even felt like it was gonna snow, they're heavy as hell but warm and secure - I used to try Hoffman's and Schnee's on at the Portland Sportman's Expo every year and they always gave me the sensation that I was gonna fall backwards, White's didn't so I started wearing them - I think I'd like to have a pair in my gearbox so before I commit again I'm gonna go through the "try on" sequence again - Anyone else have any input on heel height in Pac boots ?
