Alaskan Girl Drops Bear with 9mm

This past weekend at Skilak Lake on the Kenai Peninsula, a girl dropped a charging blackbear with one shot from her 9mm after it had mauled her dog. It gets up and she drops it again with another shot. It gets up again, she fires a 3rd round and hightails it out with her injured dog, which she gets to the vet.

You can view it as you want, but two rounds fired from a Glock 43 and both rounds hit and dropped the bear.. damn!

“I pull my pistol and I shot, boom, down like a sack of potatoes goes the bear,” Price said. “And I was like, okay, good lights out.”

If she had wanted to ensure that it was dead, she would have had the opportunity to empty her mag into its cns at point blank range.

Did not realize this was a black bear- explains why the 9mm seemed to work so well.

if I’m carrying a sidearm it’s a 9mm, it’s the same as the small cal vs large cal debate, less recoil=better shooting, better shooting=more ethical kills and more rounds on target, I’d much rather be able to dump most a mag into a charging bear than get one hopefully lucky shot off. I shoot my 9 better than 10mm or 6shooters, that’s all

That area has alot of bear. Rough lake to be on in a small boat when the afternoon winds pick up.
As for not finishing off the bear, she stopped the threat. #1 priority in an attack, dead bear would be nice but she had her pup to worry about. Plus, she had a G43, not exactly high capacity mags. Save your ammo and watch for another threat and hope on luck.

Glad her pup will be ok

I first learned about bears doing this when shot from Tony Russ some years ago. The bears reaction is not atypical behavior. I posted this story earlier but Ben wrote up a more captivating intro/title

Coincidentally, the bear my friend shot while spring bear hunting a few weeks ago did the same thing. It took off into the brush, laid down and stayed very still. With two partitions in it it laid there for about 15-20 minutes. When he approached the bear it was staring right at him but appeared dead. It twitched slightly so he put another one in it from 30 feet, and then it still had enough umph to climb a tree.

My favorite story was told to me by a patient. Grizzly bear down, everyone taking pictures. Guy is holding the bears head up for the photo. Lets go of the bears head. Head stays up!

Can we change the title of this post to “Bad Ass Alaskan Woman Drops Bear with 9mm”. She kept her cool, placed the shots she was presented and got herself and her dogs out of trouble with what seems like a very cool head. Thats more than A LOT of people I know would be able to do. Good for her!!

There was a large grizz killed on the Russian River with a 9 a few years back.

I killed a black bear with my g43 at 10 yards elk scouting (had a tag) a few years back. They work.

Yup. A 9mm with hard cast LBT style bullets. Shot placement and penetration are king and queen, not bore diameter.

I changed to 4" 686 with 180gr buffalo bores when I did carry a pistol. Used to carry a 3" 44mag but my wife had a hard time shooting it. Since she was my main hiking companion, I carried something she could shoot ...just in case she had to grab it.
Between shot placement, I believe in luck. Those bears can come fast. Only been charged once in 18 years in AK. Double bluff by a brownie on ft Richardson. Seemed like seconds but it was overall just a couple minutes before the bear walked off

43x you can get the hi caps, basic g43 is still single stack. If they make hi cap mags for a basic g43, im in. Its one of my CCW weapons

The g43 accepts G43x magazines, the original Glock polymer 10 round and new Glock metal 15 round. After market magazines and extended base plates are available too by a few companies such as Shield Arms. I stick with the Glock made magazines myself.

I commonly carry a smaller frame Glock with a larger frames magazines for extra’s, mostly a G26/G19 with G17 magazines with extended +2 base plates for example.

43x mags are wider, hence the 10rd vs 6 or so on the g43. They dont fit. Been there, tried that.
