Alaska Winter Kill

I'm hearing dismal reports of dall winter kill in the Eastern Alaska Range.
Have you heard of problems in other areas?

Nope. Been seeing plenty of sheep in my travels this year and no comments by pilots that anything seemed out of whack in the ranges I frequent.

The lamb crop seems like it might be a bit thin in some places, but that varies so much it's hard to tell. The area I hunted last year seemed to have had a above average lamp survival rate for 2012. I'm going back this year and wouldn't be surprised if it was down a bit with the tough spring.

Sheep are thin... didn't see a single lamb in 9 days, and very few ewes. Talked to a bio who said the last sheep count in July was showing 15 lambs per 100 ewes, or less than 1/2 of normal.

Same with us. We only saw about 3 or 4 ewes and like 1 lamb. Pretty sparse.

We've had some brutal winters over the past few years.

The section of the Alaska range I just hunted we counted 50+ lambs:100 ewes. Actually the best I've seen anywhere. Very healthy looking sheep population. Reports from other areas are not so good, but at least one chunk of the state made out well.

The Brooks had a very harsh winter last season from what I hear and from our recent hunt there and the high number of kills we found...I would say last winter was tough. Fish Cops said so as well...
