Alaska Unit 14 goat hunts

Will,

What exactly are you looking for? 14 is a big unit, with several different draw and registration hunts. Are you going with a guide I assume? Do you know the area that the hunt will be?

Yk

Will I'm with YK we would need some more info before we could help

I looked at the goat regs for 14c for the first time. Twenty mile registration hunts are pretty interesting. I bet the winner creek trail head has some parking issues in the fall.

That's one of those ones that look good on paper...lol. Doable but tough. There are some great draw hunts in the park and some huge goats!

Last year the 20 Mile was one of the most popular registration hunts in the Chugach. All 31 of the fall hunters managed to take 6 goats. Apparently popular is relative when it comes to goats.

That said, a 16% success rate is about as good as your average walk-in sheep hunt, so I suppose that is to be considered.

Someone needs to take your calculator away;). All thing considered that doesn't sound like bad odds at all.

14C. As Im a nonresident Ill be going guided, with Rich Moran who was recommended through Rokslide. We put in for several draws but as it tends to happen, better luck next year. So we will be doing the registration hunt. Im told Rich pushes it pretty hard, which reminds me I should go for another run.....

I assume you are doing the early season archery only hunt? thick leafy alders and bugs from sea level to 5000 feet any place there is not a rock face. If Rick is going to pack in then there is just one decent spot to go in and that is the Winner Creek trail, but that will be full of families and hikers and other hunters. I would imagine to save time and leg wear he could jet boat up the river to the lake or float plane in to the lakes below the glaciers. That would get you away from most of the walk in hunters.

Link to Upper Winner Creek trail information. Lots of photos of the area up top.

Could also be the other side of the park too.
The above is great info!

Besides expecting the unexpected, what is typical early September weather in the Chugach? Im working on my gear list right now.

60x would be a good guy to talk to, but generally the weather in the Chugach is influenced by the coast more than other more northern ranges. "Usually" it's warmer and wetter, but the ocean influence also makes it highly variable that time of year plus occasionally subject to some wicked wind storms. I'd pack for both snow and rain as either one is probable at the higher elevations. Coming from Texas, you will likely want to go heavy on the warm gear and bring plenty of sleeping bag because your body may not be acclimated to mountain weather.

I'm headed in Sept 28 in the hopes of getting a better hair and it should be pretty cool by then.

YK pretty much nailed it. Sept is a crazy time of year as far as weather is concerned in the park.(14c) kind of like in like a lamb out like a lion. Usually lots of the wet weather sometimes slushy snow and wind for sure. But some years warm and sunny. I would do as YK suggested and prepare for colder weather and hope for the opposite.. Elevation will certainly come into play also. I took a goat in there about 4 or 5 years ago and shot it in almost white out conditions but 2000' below there wasn't a spec of snow.. It's a great area in there and I miss the days I spent in there.. You will have and epic adventure for sure and I can't wait to read the report!!

Well looking at EO's today my October plans kind of got dashed. While 14a didn't go draw only the emergency order on the 18th says they gave out enough draw permits that there won't be a registration hunt at all in 14a.
