I’m hoping to do a guided Alaska moose hunt in the next 1-3 years. I’m an experienced DIY western hunter and in good shape, but have never had the luck to pull a moose tag in the lower 48 (yet). It’s been a bucket list item to go on a guided moose hunt…thinking Alaska, but open to elsewhere. Anyone have tips for how to approach it? Recommendations for an Outfitter? I’ve done research online, but that only gets you so far and I’d love to hear from folks who have personal experience. PM’s welcome!

Pic of a Colorado moose I got to watch from this past season with a deer tag in my pocket. Just for kicks!

Guided I will throw out Cabot Pitts, Scott Mileur, Renfros. I personally know them.

If your really in decent shape and are self sufficient in a wilderness setting, I'd call Papa Bear or Renfros and get on their diy list. I have hunted twice with Papa Bear successfully. You could save $15 to $20 thousand over going guided. Don't wait if serious, it's only getting more costly.

Thank you! Definitely self sufficient and not worried too much about the physical aspect…aside from packing a moose out. Solo harvested bull elk this last fall in Idaho and Colorado, but that probably child’s play compared to a moose on the ground!

Appreciate the recommendations. I will look them up!

If you want to go in 3 years, you pretty much need to book it now.

This ^^^

I have 2 sets of friends that are wanting to go on a DIY moose hunt. One set tried to book for 2025 and couldn't, the other set tried to get 2026 and was told soonest they could squeeze them in was 2027.

If you find an open spot within the next 2-4 years, with an operation/pilot you feel comfortable with, send the deposit now!

Also determine what you really want vs cost. You can go guided in BC for less and in Alberta for way less than Alaska. Of coarse AK has the bigger animals.
