Anyone do Alaska moose /caribou without an air charter from the road out of Fairbanks or ankroge? Went with an ai charter out of Fairbanks several years ago and it seems much more difficult to plan this in advance. Or better question finding another air charter worth the money?

Lots of public lands available. I'd use the Milepost magazine to find places to pull off. Use maps for looking for habitat. Get a little bit of the road. There is always opportunity. And places to get out into that are remote. Guess it's about expectations and effort.
I'll just say this. I get out because I like it. A lot. And hunting around looking for moose, caribou without a wheeler or flying out is done a lot. I did. Still do. And having the opportunity to match wits with Mother Nature and moose or caribou great. Harvesting one is icing on good cake.
I'd say if you want to make the opportunity. Get after it n go, good luck n have fun

Air service for moose is pricing out most people, myself included. Probably 10k ish when factoring multiple trips for meat out of the field. Road hunts are doable but your range get more limited to closer you get to the end of a road based hunt. At least 500lb of boned out meat plus antlers. Takes time and heavy miles to pack a moose out. Caribou you can get in 2 trips. Still 20 miles of packing for the haul road.

I tried this last year just kind of for fun. There is definitely public near Anchorage and Fairbanks, but if you don't live there and basically have the pin on an animal to kill opening day, it is very unlikely to come together.

I actually *did* have the pin on a bull I saw from the air- which I flew over twice and verified he was around both times before the opener- and even waiting for him on sunrise opening day, the only thing that ever materialized were a bunch of ATVs.

There's always a chance, just not a good one.

The militia was out in force yesterday for the moose opener around Fairbanks. Lots of ATV's and SxS's rolling up and down each road and side road. Didn't see any dead animals on the back.

I don't hunt around town but I always have my bow in my car during September... you can archery hunt moose in town and you never know when you'll get lucky seeing a moose after dropping the kids off at school

Our honey hole is ATV accessible. Three of us would hunt together and we would quit after we killed two bulls. I would bet the vast majority of Alaskans get their moose via ATV's or UTV's. When unit 13 was producing good caribou I would shoot a decent bull moose and a caribou in the same area and could of killed grizzly as well. All for the price of gas for the ATV's.
Do your homework and find a spot. Don't overlook the obvious. The spot we hunt is along a trail network that everyone else rides past so they can get to the "end".

Done it before lots of work. Hunted them like whitetails around towns and panned out. Don’t overlook places near towns.
