Flying to Alaska from the Lower 48. Has anybody checked a rifle and ammo with Alaska air? I have a pelican 1750 case and am going to check it with a spot cut out for 2 boxes o

f hornady ammo. My question is can the ammo be in a factory ammo box? The wording on their website is not overly clear. Anybody have any input on this. Thanks in advance

Ammo can be and usually is in the box. Ak Air has essentially no say in the matter. The inspection will be by TSA.

They just recently (as of this year) started opening and physically inspecting/testing all rifle cases up here. Assuming it’s the same in the L48, allow time to hand carry your rifle to the TSA and and open for inspection. The ticket counter will point you to the right place to go when you declare it at check in.

You will need padlocks for all lock points on the case.

Rounds need to be in a box made to hold ammunition. No loose ammo, ziplock bags, etc. I've flown several times with a Pelican with a couple boxes of rounds in a cutout- no problems.

I fly monthly with firearms / ammo via Delta. I always keep a printed copy of this TSA doc handy.

I've recently run into checks on the actual hard case also. It's a problem if they can pry open a corner of the case when closed and see / touch the firearm. I now put my rifles in a thin gun sleeve inside of the hard case to avoid this issue. Watched a guy at MSP get super jammed up over this last Fall with his cheap plastic case.

One other pointer..

Every spot on the case made to accept a lock must be locked with a "non-TSA" padlock. On my case...that's 4 locks. I just picked up a 4-pack of keyed alike locks.

As stated above, you shouldn't have any issues. You can legally check up to 50 lbs. of ammo on a non-international commercial airliner, and it's not a problem to ship in the same case as your firearm.

What about quantity of firearms in 1 case? Can you include a handgun in your rifle case, or does each firearm need its own case? I read the TSA link but did not catch where it references quantity of firearms per case specifically.

No limit that I've ever ran across. I have often mixed firearms in a case. Very common.

You can also have a locked handgun case inside of a regular piece of luggage. Obviously it has to be declared and inspected as per normal, but I have a couple of smaller pelican cases, and have traveled with them inside my duffel many times.

Ammo doesn't have to be locked up in my experience. I've traveled with bulk handgun and shotgun ammo and just stacked them inside my bags.

I think you can put as many in the case as will fit. years ago I flew from Portland, OR. back up to Anchorage and packed 11 long guns and two pistols into two big rifle cases. TSA seemed a bit concerned, baffled, confused, you name it, but they closed the cases, locked them up, and sent 'em.

May I make a few suggestions. Ditch the foam in the case. I almost always throw it away. Get a good soft case and put the gun in that. Then put the soft case in the hard case. Then use your hunting clothes or other personals to fill in the remaining area of the case. Less bags to take on the plane. You also have a soft case for other areas of the hunt. Float plane horse back ect.

I fly alot with guns all ammo has to be in some sort of case or fixed box. Extra magazines work as well it just cant be loose. Locks have to be on every area of the case. If your flying outside the us the ammo has to be in a separate locked box. Also make sure you go to customs and get the right paperwork completed if traveling outside the us

Ammo is supposed to be locked up. Expecially if flying outside the us
My experience outside the us led to Canada. I had the ammo locked in a box and then locked that box in with the rifle. Big mistake it has two be completely different shipments

No limit, last summer we had ~ 13 guns in 2 cases TSA didn’t care at all.

I fly to a lot of 3 gun competitions, and one thing I've learned the hard way is that magazines need to be empty. I used to load up my magazines with my long range 223 ammo to try and save space, but they won't allow that now. Ammo must be in a factory box or another container meant to hold ammo.

Every airline has their own “policy” although TSA does the inspections and ultimately up to them. I flew with Alaska Air last fall and had my ammo in their original boxes tucked in the foam inside my gun case just as you want to do with no problems. Hope this helps.

Due to what happened to a buddy leaving Adak a few years ago, I travel with my ammo in plastic ammo boxes secured with a couple of rubber bands to keep them from sliding open. My buddy had his ammo in the factory cardboard box and it was destroyed by the water getting into his pack. All that was left of the box was the foam shell holder part. This allowed his shells to not be "secured" while in the pack. $350 fine from FAA.

It never hurts to have the rules from the TSA website and the Airline Policies printed off and on hand with you.

In some of the more rural Alaskan airports, the TSA/Airport staff recruiting pool is pretty small and sometimes the bottom of the barrel gets scraped a bit.

I fly with dry ice pretty frequently and end up with a clueless agent about 20% of the time. Having the rules printed out ahead of time usually helps to smooth things over.
