Alabama Bound!

I must say thank you for starting this thread. I live in western NC and AL is only about 2hrs away. That being said, I have never really thought about hunting AL until now... Definitely will have to look into now.

Had bucks acting rutty the week before Christmas on the north end of our property, now they're acting rutty on the south end and have been for about a week or so.

Very weird rut and hard to pattern but I love it!

Any rut reports from the south east corner of Alabama? I’ll be there next week.

Shot this one in Lowndes County last evening. Chasing a doe across a ridge in a drain I was hunting in. Long shot in the woods for me at 180 yards. He stopped just long enough in a clear area to give me a good shot. He took about ten steps then nosed in. Not the biggest in the woods but glad to get him as I thought I would only be a spectator last night. Oh boy did he stink. Worst I ever smelled. I guess the rut is on here on this lease.IMG_1941.jpegIMG_1936.jpeg

That’s a great Alabama deer. Congrats my man. Fun when they are chasing.

Been busy since I got back from our Alabama trip to get on here and report back. We had a great time hunting a new area. Buddies place is a big timber operation. Tons of food plots scattered all through it. The focus was on the boys (12 of them and all seniors in HS). 4 of them had never shot a deer and all 4 got their first. Great experience for them. My son passed on some decent 8’s that weren’t mature enough for him. Proud he didn’t just shoot one to shoot one.

Spend the last 3 days in SE AL (January 30, 31, Feb 1). Saw a little bit of rut activity day 1, but otherwise had a pretty slow trip. Seems like we could never escape swirling winds, and I am sure the warm front after what has been some pretty cold weather didn't help. Here's to better luck next year! Of course as we left today it had already cooled down again.

I hunted this past weekend. 3 Sits on our place in Russell County, every slow

Saw two deer. 3.5 yr old 8 point Saturday evening with 4 minutes of legal light left. Wouldn't have normally shot (at as it turned out) this deer, but my 6 yr old daughter was with me. Turned into a fire drill right before pulling the trigger, trying to get her ear muffs on, making noise, etc. Rushed a 180 yd shot, completely whiffed and jerked. He kept standing there, turned and walked directly away from me. Got steadier, aimed at the base of his neck, and he ran out of our lives. No blood found, no deer. Went back and checked again Sunday morning and found some tuffs of hair, but no blood. I imagine he's just fine, with a new scar.

Had a spike walk within 5 yards of me Sunday morning while switching stands.

And that was a wrap on my deer season. Upset with myself for missing that deer, but also glad he can get bigger next year.

My BiL passed a buck, that he regrets doing after reviewing pics of a big 8 we had on camera all season 100 yards from where he saw him. Like a really good 8 pointer. Reminded him we weren't in Kentucky where he grew up hunting! He only saw 2 deer the whole weekend as well.

Very slow compared to what the last couple of weeks looked like on our cameras.

We aren't seeing many bucks the last week. A few smaller ones but no bruisers. Some friends of ours about 45 minutes southwest of us are saying the same thing. Hope it picks up but its going to be a very warm week.
