Have hunted moose 3 times with them and every trip was epic. Have also hunted moose 3 times in other areas, all great adventures but nowhere near the numbers of moose. My advice, if you have a chance to go with them, jump on it. I doubt that you will regret it. Crazy moose numbers in their area. Very well run professional operation. We did not experience the glut of hunters and transport delays that someone else suggested.

Those are some great videos!! Really gives me a good idea of what the hunt is like. Thanks for sharing.

Moose in the water strategy was avoid at all costs. Did not have a come along. It was a mess. Definitely caused meat problems.

I hunted with Renfros once, and I had a very mixed experience. I regret not going with Papa Bear as I have never heard a single negative thing about them.

Wade takes A LOT of unguided hunters (I think over 100 annually now), and your experience can be very dependent on the luck-of-the-draw where they drop you. There were guys while I was in Bethel who were extremely upset because Wade's assembly line of DIY hunters came to a halt when guys were not being flown out in good weather. We were delayed about three days before we were flown out, which I didn't think was that big of a deal. What concerned me the most was, the pilot who flew us had extremely poor judgement; he overloaded our plane and took three attempts to get us off the water in Bethel, then crashed the plane because it too was overloaded about 45 minutes after dropping us off. That video is on youtube, and thankfully all four people on board walked away, but Wade's company had three (3) airplane crashed that year.

We had other hunters very close to us (I could see a guy walking the shore of the same lake we were on, dropped by a Renfro plane). Our food package was a complete joke, and the gear package we rented was not maintained or taken care of. If you go with Renfro's, I would take your own food and gear.

Most find Wade to be a good guy, but he does have a history with the AK Fish and Game you can look up online. The good thing is that his area still has a very high population of moose with the majority of that having no antler restriction. For that reason, his success rates are high, but many are immature bulls in the 35-45" range. Of course, some guys are shooting 60"+ bulls, too, but the majority of those are taken by his guided clients. We were into bulls daily, but nothing over the mid 50's that we could find.

In all honesty, your attitude, perspective and perseverance will make or break your experience with most any DIY hunt.

lessons learnt for sure. a come along always with us worth the penalty weight and i do understand you might not need it but if you do better having it. we helped people one day that did not have one and they were thankful so a come along or learn how to do prusik knots ...

I just chuckle at all the Rockslide Randy’s who have to tell you their moose hunt was DIY yet they didn’t pick the spot they were dropped off at. You know, the hardest part of the whole hunt/planning

ahhhh but we have the internet now! You can learn how to do everything without ever doing it!
Remember the old days, blue tarp signals, topo maps, flaming white gas stoves getting thrown out of tents, wondering if the pilot crashed on his way home and no one knew where you were, just going out and ground pounding to try a area and see if it was any good, trial and error on everything!
