AK Moose/Caribou Planning and Gear Lessons Learned

I spent 10 days on the helinox cot lite(under 3 lbs) and I am not a small guy at about 220 lbs. While I could have done the hunt without it, I don't intend on not having a cot for my next moose hunt, it will definately be in my camp and worth the weight.

All depends on camp location and conditions. Some places not that helpful, others borderline required.

If you're in there for more than 3-4 days, sleep on a cot. Worth every penny/ounce.

This fall my pad had a hole that I could not get fully patched on day one...slept fine with my helinox cot for 12 nights.

Is the helinox cot worth the 6 lb weight penalty?
I did 18 days on a therm-a-rest luxury lite cot (3lbs) and Exped Dura 7T pad and sept like a baby. The cot is noisy and it’s rated at 350lbs but at 200lbs, I’d say that would be the limit. Some reviews say it’s hard to set up but I don’t agree. I tested it before I went hunting and it was fine. We were limited on weight so this was the best option for me. It all depends on the terrain. We didn’t know the exact terrain we were going to be in and I’m glad we planned for the worst because the most level area we could find was lumpy.

The Helinox lite cot is well worth its weight. Expensive but worth it. I’d not burn 6lb of my weight limit on a cot.

New Stove Update.

Against my better judgement and only because I wanted the glass front they offered I got a SO Standard XL .

I've been running a Winnerwell and went that route because of the ease of set up.

Once put together the SO is nice. Glass in the front is sweet and will provide light but man just lots of parts and no joke more than 5 times the set up time.

Im hoping the burn time and larger size of this will be worth the IMO significantly more PITA to put this together. Will burn it in and use it this July at fish camp. I'll provide more thoughts on it then.

Do you have to fly with this in your luggage? I just got a new one as well and am wondering how durable the metal is and how to fly with it.

Yes. No issues at all. I use a large NRS bag for my commercial flights and pack it in between smaller waterproof roll top bags.

They do get a little easier the more times you do it, but if I was moving everyday it would drive me nuts.
