Airline travel...best duffles out there?

I thank all for the great advice. I really has been very helpful insight. This is the great thing about this forum, to get many unbiased perspectives on how to do something is priceless to me.

I thank all for your valuable input here. I will let you guys know what I ended up with.

My best advice is that I would really reconsider checking your pack. Instead, I would encourage you to pack your boots in it (or wear them), optics, rain gear, and a set of camo in it and use that as your carry-on so your trip won't be ruined due to a lost bag. In a worst case scenario, you can borrow a rifle. Boots and binos are tougher to borrow.

When I go on a hunt like that (where the airline isn't going to be able to easily get a bag lost for 2 days directly to me), I bring two checked bags and put a bow, some arrows, and ~ half my hunting gear in each so that if one is lost, I can still hunt.

That strategy will also save you on excess baggage fees. One thing to consider is to pack the expensive/fragile stuff in the top lid, so you can pull that off and use that as your carry-on in the off chance you need to gate check your pack.

I'm going to pick up the REI pack duffel to see if I like it. It's certainly cheap.

I have one of those, and I'm not very happy with it. I've owned it for a couple years and used it on two fly-away hunts. On both hunts, it did its job - my pack made the roundtrip unharmed. However, both times, the REI pack duffle did not make the roundtrip unharmed - cuts/tears showed up on it. The first time this happened, I took advantage of REI's generous satisfaction guarantee and returned it for a replacement. The second time it happened, I tried the same thing, but the REI associate told me that they had changed their guarantee to a 12-month guarantee, and since I purchased the original duffle over 12 months prior, the guarantee was no longer available.

The REI pack duffle is certainly inexpensive, but I would treat it as a disposable item, if you decide to purchase one...

Regards,
Scott

I got over a decade of very hard use from my waterproof duffels. The top opening is not as large as a zipper provides, but is much more secure.[/QUOTE]

Just as Kevin Dill has pointed out, this Cabela's Boundary Waters Duffle is great. I have travelled all over the world with my XL, and has been extremely durable and retained being waterproof.
