Air Lock Industries Suppressor

There’s a funny story about that…

Back in 2003, when I was finishing up my MA in history, my best friend invited my girlfriend and me down to visit him at Dam Neck for Independence Day weekend. When he got back to class, one of his friends said, “who were the two girls who visited you this weekend? I saw you walking with them in the parking lot. One had long black hair and a great figure. The other had short brown hair and was just butt ugly.” My friend replied, “two girls?” No, that was my friend [Q] and his girlfriend. Not everyone without a high-and-tight is female. But I agree that he is butt ugly.”
You know I’m just messing with you. Us southern boys got to stick together.

Thanks for the review and comparison. I think the OG6.5 and the ZG6.5 are two of the best hunting cans out right now.

I own the ZG6.5, and am deciding if I want an OG6.5 or the 6mm airlock can next.

Mostly just curious on your range, it almost looks like a back yard. How far can you shoot?

I agree that as consumers we are spoiled with two excellent options right now.

That’s the 100-yard range at Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club. There is also a 300-yard rifle range there.

Yes, arrange for someone with a braked magnum to shoot near you and every suppressor starts to sound lovely.
Last time I went, it was me and one other guy with a .270 TC Encore pistol with a big brake. Good god that thing was awful.

When we did our indoor shoot in Colorado we had the OG 6.5 as well, see previous pics and the Scythe Ti. So far everyone’s impressions match up 👍🏻

I picked up the Airlock ZG 6.5 from my SOT yesterday and tried it out at the range today.

BLUF: I think it is safe to say that it lives up to the hype. Everyone who heard it agreed that it was the quietest of the three cans I shot today. Several observers also noted that the ZG had a higher pitch than the other two.

Rifle: Tikka 6.5mm CM, 20” barrel
Ammo: S&B 140-grain FMJ (average MV 2585, slightly faster than the Hornady I use for hunting).
Suppressors: AB Raptor 8 w/ 3” reflex; US OG 6.5, Airlock ZG 6.5
Weather: 48 F

I did two sessions gathering the handful of folks at the range for each session. All of them had prior suppressor experience, none was familiar with any of the three cans I brought today.

I forgot to hit record on the first session. Second session is here (pardon the old guy with his Garand, I tried not to shoot at the same time as him, but you can hear him banging away at the end of the firing line). The camera was just behind my right shoulder. As you can hear at the beginning of the video, I don’t expect much from smartphone mics, but some folks asked for it.

Quotes not captured on video:

“It’s not as quiet as my Scythe Ti using .300 Blackout subs… but obviously that’s not a fair comparison.”

“All three are very quiet, but I have to give the edge to the second one [the ZG 6.5].”

“That second one [the ZG 6.5] has a much higher pitch, but it sounds quieter.”

My subjective impressions as shooter. The Raptor had the least felt recoil. The ZG had noticeably more thump. Of course, this is expected based upon relative weights. And none were at all unpleasant to shoot.

It did get noticeably hotter than the others. With the LS Wild cover, I could still unscrew it after five shots. I noticed slight mirage with the cover after the fifth shot. I also have an LS Wild cover on the OG 6.5.

I concur with the observers that the ZG was the quietest relative to the others, but all were very quiet.

In the future, I plan to rent some sound equipment and run a test where I don’t have M1 Garands in the background.

POI shift: The rifle was sighted in using different ammo (Hornady factory 140-grain ELDMs) and with the Raptor. This ammo was hitting about 0.5” higher with the Raptor. With the Airlock and OG, each was about 2” higher than that. The ZG 6.5 and OG 6.5 shot to the same POI.

Thanks for doing this, that's pretty much the exact lineup I'm looking at for my next suppressor. Really impressive that either the ZG or OG can keep up with the Raptor 8, I wonder how much of a role bore diameter plays there since the raptor is 30 cal.

According to AB and US, bore diameter makes a measurable difference with the reflex suppressors. I have seen reports of 1-3 decibels difference. For the muzzle forward cans, the differences are closer, from what I have read and heard.

Edit - I’d expect a 6.5mm bore AB Raptor 8 to be 1-3 decibels quieter than the 7.62mm bore. Maybe AB has a video on that?

To my ears the last shot with the OG can seemed substantially quieter then any before it as well as any others that you recorded. I know from playing around with different cans and trying to record them with my cell phone to try and compare their sound can often leave you chasing your tail because what you hear live in person versus how the mic picks it up can be vastly different.

I did a recording on my phone a few years back that I wanted to send a buddy to show him how much quieter low velocity 22LR ammo was VS high velocity with all being shot through a suppressor. I was shooting into a bullet trap out in my shop and live there was a noticeable difference but when I watched/listened to the video I couldn't tell a bit of difference between any of it and on the video it all seemed sooo much louder then it did actually shooting. It was weird because I thought all the ammo sounded so loud in the video but then I noticed what seemed like this really loud tink tink noise in the background which was much louder then the shots and it was the tink of the brass hitting the concrete floor which in person I could barely even hear. It can be very deceiving how mics pick up sound and play them back on videos.

Thanks for sharing this info and summary. Very informative and useful information. That Airlock looks like a badass lightweight hunting can.
It literally feels like an empty Red Bull can in the hand, it's ridiculous. I can't wait for mine to get approved.
