i wanted to do a follow up on this thread. i finally got around to ordering a harness 6 months later. i ended up just going all the way and ordering a Kodiak CUB with the MAX basement pocket. first off thank you to black ovis. i placed my order on monday and it was here yesterday when i got home. all of the the recommendations they gave above were dead on.
yes, my rangefinder would have fit in the basement pocket but getting it in and out would have been a pain. front pocket is really the only option. they leave the tail end of the shock cord for the top flat closure long so you can just use that as a tether for your rangefinder.
bow string clearance with my 36" ATA bow was no issue. you're really pulling the string towards the side of the harness so the depth of the front pocket doesn't matter. I still need to experiment with some more extreme shooting angles though.
i can't see any downside to getting the MAX basement pocket. i don't notice it's down. in addition to some extra storage there is the added benefit of making your side pockets taller.
i've got the top 2 shoulder straps shortened as much as they'll go to get it up high on the chest. i'm thinking i might cut those off and just put split bar ladderlocks up there so i can shorten them a touch more. you really only need to unclip one side buckle to take it on and off.
i'm going to take it in to the woods this weekend for some spring gobbler hunting and test it out. loaded it up last night and it's perfect for a minimalist turkey setup. had my mouth calls in one side pocket, a crow call and scratch pad in the other. even with my 8x42s in the main pocket there is a perfect spot to slip a pot and peg in there as well. i think it's also going to give me a nice place to rest the butt of my shotgun while i'm calling. we'll see how that works out.
