Reflecting on an epic hunting season, that started here in California and spanned multiple states. My pup Nelli is in her prime and she had the season of her career. We kicked things off in September chasing ptarmigan in the high country, finding birds around 11,000 feet. After that, we took a break and welcomed our first child!

Once the quail opener arrived, Nellie and I were back at it. We hunted quail here in California before heading to southeast Arizona, where we had a tough but successful trip. We got into Mearns, Gambel’s, and Scaled quail, with our first encounter on scalies. My pup also does her best work on Mearns, which is great to watch.

We recently got back from our first trip to NE NV. That trip was worth the haul up there, really fun getting into some decent sized birds with chukar and huns on the same walk. Makes those little valleys look like midgets.

With the season wrapping up this month, I’m hoping Nellie and I can squeeze in one or two more walks. Would be great to hear about others getting out there traveling and chasing birds from mountain desert, etc.
