(I posted this in a reply on "meat care" section of the forum too. Remove post if necessary)

I just got back home (New York) from a trip to Ohio to help my brother in law move. A guy passed us with a beautiful set of horns on top of his gear. Man that was cool to see for a flatlander like me! And also what looked like a chest freezer with a generator hooked up. Pretty interesting way to transport meat! Anyone done this? Seems like an ok idea?

A lot of people bring a chest freezer/generator. I'm guessing once its frozen solid it will stay that way for a while

Funny thing is you can buy a chest freezer cheaper these days than a rotomolded cooler!

Before I put a shell on my truck, I took my freezer like that one season. It worked great, 80lb of ice lasted nine days with very little melt.

I know a few guys that have electrical hook ups in the bed of their trucks for this exact reason. Plug the freezer in, get it cold, add meat and when your home everything is still solid.

I got one like that for 60 bucks on the Facebook marketplace. I froze 12 gallon jugs of water a couple days before we left in it put it in the back of the truck and took off. Even opening the freezer and pulling jugs out to drink the jugs were still partially frozen a week later. We had an inverter to run the freezer for the way home if we got something but we weren’t that lucky. Way cheaper than enough yeti coolers for a couple elk and more convenient.

I’m on the road a lot ( heavy equipment mechanic) around Indianapolis. I see a lot of rigs every fall that have pretty much the same set up come across interstate 70. I always wonder what the story was on everyone one of them. LOL.

That's how we run. Chest freezer and 2000watt generator. If we get too much meat for the freezer to keep up with we will toss 15# of dry ice on the top and it will all be solid the next morning.

the front bunks in my outback travel trailer fold up, so I will put a chest freezer inside and run a cord to a generator in the bed of the truck. It keeps the freezer nice and cold and really my generator is running at idle even when its in the 80*'s most of the time.
