I learned something last elk season that was very interesting and potentially life saving. I was packing in a climbing tree stand. Those things a really bulky and do not make for running well through the woods. I took a short cut off the trail and stepped on a hornets nest, the type that live in the ground. Instantly they swarmed me and started stinging me around my neck. That day I had filled a new spray bottle with 90% Deet. I carry it on my Alaskan Guide chest pack. I grabbed the Deet and sprayed my face and neck, I didn't get one more sting.

One time before I got into hornets and got stung 60 times on my neck. Not a pleasant experience. Hope it helps someone someday.

Glad you were ok. Spouse stepped in one as we were sneaking through the timber just before daylight one year. All I heard was hornets , run ! Run I did, in a zig zag for about 75 yds uphill. I got 2 stings, the spouse about 6, ankles and wrists.
We had bees and hornets checking us out the rest of the day.
Benadryl probably should be in your pack if you have allergic issues.

I know you can not pack to prevent every thing or every scenario, but if it small and lite it is going in my Pack. I have been carrying Deet still have the 100% bottles for ever and have used it a couple of times on my camo for skeeters and other pest very happy to know I can add wasps, hornets and bees hopefully ?

I’ve been attacked 4 or 5 times this week clearing brush in AK. One got me on the nose and my eyes wouldn’t quit watering for 10 minutes I’m about sick of them.

Last fall I got blasted on the hands, head and arms while driving a tractor pulling a brush hog. I'm trying to convince my wife I need a new tractor with a cab.

Got drilled in the hand Monday by a wasp felt like I was hit with a nail gun. I can tell you the way my hand swelled I would be dead if stung in the neck too many times. Today it finally looks and feels normal.

It's kind of weird. In 40+ years of hiking around forests I had never seen or found a yellow jacket nest or hornet nest. Then last year I found several yellow jacket nests on the ground. Bizarre.

The first one I found I had no idea what it was (blueish-gray plastic looking thing), so of course I had to poke it with a stick. Yellow jackets came pouring out of it and I ran......no stings. Then me being me, of course I had to poke all the others I found as well....still no stings.

Man, I don’t care what’s on my back, when I step on a yellow jacket nest, I’m running as fast as I possibly can. I’ll ditch the pack If it’s slowing me down and come back in winter for it. I hate those bastards. I’ve been stung a lot and each time it’s a little bit worse.

This!!!!...Yellerjackets always get me running the brush hog...If I dont hit at least 3 nests a year I start feeling a little cheated. They usually dont bother me too much. Got one up the nose one year eyes swelled shut for a day or so but other than that the stings just swell a little and itch after dark. Little chewing tobacco helps take the itch out.

When they do get you, you'll stop poking and treat them with some serious respect...

Last year one afternoon I threw a couple chicken bones with some meat left on them on the ground in front of my camp chair and sat there for two hours swatting yellow jackets as they swarmed to them. Elk camp entertainment. Must have killed at least a couple hundred or more. It was almost nonstop. Last year was the worst year I've seen for them.

Been there done that a few times. Most I ever got hit was 21 times. Bleeding from my temples, stung in my nose, under my lips, eyes swelled up, etc..... Not fun.

I finally saw a couple of those last year in camp........in my fly trap. I had never seen those before in my life. Mean looking creatures.

We used to see them cruising timber in college. We threw rocks at a nest and knocked it down and jumped in the truck. They swarmed the truck and you could hear them pinging off the windows. They’re mean, very mean.

Also carry Benadryl in your med-kit.
