A magnum that uses H4831?

I'm trying too streamline my reloading by using one powder across the board.

Currently loading the 22CM and 6.5CM with H4831.

I'd love to have a step up from 6.5 that can also use 4831. One powder to keep, one to use for all my handloading.

Suggestions?

Can it be used in a magnum case? Most likely the answer will be yes, but understand that you will have a less than optimal case fill and will also give up some velocity. H4350 was the first powder I tried in 6.5x55 and quickly learned there were better options for my case = i.e. bulkier and/or slower burning powders, and 6.5x55 is certainly not a magnum.

If you’re going to have a spread in rifle cartridges, one powder isn’t going to cut it. If that was the case we’d all be using one powder.

4831 is widely useful. My 338wm seems to like it fine. I imagine all the smaller bore belted mags probably like it even more (300, 7mm, 264....)

I've had good luck with it in a 7 rem mag. I would imagine it would be good in the 7 PRC as well. Maybe not the fastest powder but I understand what you are trying to do. I've done the same with H4350.

I've used H4831 in my 6.5cm, 270wsm, 300wby and 7mag. It's a very versatile powder.

The label on the bottle gives loads for 7mm Mag and 300 WM, maybe ask Hodgdon?

I don't load any CM cases, but I would be curious if you can get enough H4831 in those cases to get the kind of velocity that a faster burning powder can produce. I would think H4350/RL16/N555 would be much better options in those cases. Like Flyjunky said, if you're hoping to use only 1 powder for everything, you should expect some tradeoffs.

The 4350 is king in the CM but 4831 works. It is better than the 4350 when you start pushing the heavy for caliber projectiles in the 6.5cm.

I know a couple guys that run it in 300 WM. Not the best powder IMO but it shoots good for them.

I tend to like wringing out every possible fps I can from a cartridge.

Thanks. I use to be the same way. Until I started picking moderate powder charges during the Covid times to conserve some powder, and found that animals still died at 2750 the same way they do at 2900.

All to say, I chase less velocity and more simplicity from the reloading bench now.
