Just finished up a fair season here in Idaho and thought I would relay my experiences.

The 88s in my 1:7 twist 22-250 are more capabie than one might imagine. Didn’t INTEND to elk hunt with this rifle, but a scope issue with my son’s rifle led me down this path in a tight spot.

I killed a second bull later in the hunt with my .280ai and while it made me FEEL more comfortable,… the little .22-250 killed the bull just as dead with about the same distance traveled post-shot (30 yards).

I bet that thing was smoking at impact. I assume you didn’t hit bone? What did the entrance look like? No exit right?

He had a post in the 223 thread

270 yards w/ exit, looks like right in the crease.

MV was around 3050 as I recall. Terrible photo, but this was the exit side…

Shot distance was 270ish. I hit the big shoulder joint on exit, and it smashed it to pieces.

Killed a smaller buck with the same 88s on the same hunt, with similar results, though the bullet didn’t exit the deer fwtw.

I’ve just resized and shot. However, I would suggest getting 22CM if you can or 6mm cm.

@Formidilosus just made the mistake of walking into the Europtic showroom which resulted in walking out with a 1:8 Tikka 22-250. Am I understanding correctly that you would recommend having it rechambered to 22 Creedmoor now, rather than shooting 1500-2000 rounds through the 22-250 barrel and then having it shortened from the breech end and rechambered to 22 Creed? From other posts I see the tikka in 22-250 should stabilize the 88 ELD-Ms just fine?

And on the 88 ELD-Ms, is there a MAXIMUM velocity beyond which upset is too much?

He 22-250 you have will stabilize the 88’s. However, yes I/we all get them rechambered to 22CM immediately. You get better MV without pushing it, brass is everywhere, factory ammo is now available, less/no case stretching, and in a pinch 22-250 ammo can be fired safely in it.

No. The 88’s issue is that sometimes (not often) it doesn’t upset enough for my preference.
