For a qualifying license, just to be able to apply for a preference point. I realize they need money but dang I'd like to get something in return, instead of a small game permit. I'm not driving 1100 miles to squirrel hunt.

I would be so much happier if I could buy the OTC $100 bear tag instead for a qualifying license.

Didn't know that they also changed the rule to exclude previous years tags as qualifying... BOO!!!

Oh well! Gotta play the game I guess...

$81.75 for a qualifying license isn't too bad. Arizona is a $160 license for nonresident combo fishing/hunting, they won't even let you buy just a hunting license. Pretty sure Nevada is like $150 for a non resident license as well. Utah is around $80 too, I believe. Cost to play the game, and that's fine by me, because there's very few elk and no mountains in Kansas.

Ya I really do get it. And I pay to play with little remorse. I just like to have a warm snuggly feeling after sending cash down the line. Instead of just feeling raped, with nothing to show for my money.

You can shear a sheep many times, but you can only skin him once. I feel like they are sharpening their skinning knives.

LOL. Wonder what next year will look like. I am dedicated to understanding Colorado draws, so yearly changes don't bother me. 😁

I should probably add that I have yet to spend any money on it, just time trying to figure out their yearly changes. My plan is one point first season draw opportunities.

At least with CO it's $9 per point for Pronghorn, Deer, and Elk... whacked me for $100 + $9 for my sheep though. I will say, last year's pricing was insanely low, I was blown away with what I was charged for points for sheep and elk... cheapest by far of any state. I knew it was going to change the following year, so many people put in in 2018.

So just because I'm bored, here's what it is to play for points, just elk...

AZ - $160 License + $15 Fee = $175

NM - $69 License + $13 Fee = $82 (Pay in full upfront, that's your total after refund, no points)

CO - $81.75 License + $10 stamp + $9 App Fee = $100.75

UT - I'm a resident, you guys figure it out

NV - $155 License + $1 processing fee, $15 elk fee + $1 processing fee + $3 predator fee = $175

WY - This year, just applying to get a chance into the General + Purchasing a point $15 App, $50 pref fee, 18.93 processing fee (2.5%) = $85.93 (Pay in full upfront, that's your total after refund) ... Note, WY, you can only buy your points starting in July now, not on the app.

Montana - $50 preference point + $25 bonus point (I buy this in July if I'm not hunting MT) = $75 ... then if you decide you want to hunt general and put in for a LE hunt $75 points fees + 5 app fee + $15 hunting license + $15 aquatic whatever + $25.63 service fee + $870 elk license combo = $1,005.63 !!!! which is if I'm going all in to hunt MT this year which I am

ID - OTC, just buy a license and tag, I don't even bother with a chance at the limited elk draw
WA/OR - I don't bother with anything to do with these states

I play for pronghorn, deer, elk, and sheep as well so a lot of the licenses cover them and I just pay the smaller fees, either way, crazy to play.

I just wish they would give a 20% allocated NR tags a pass for random in CO or just something 25%-10%, give me a crying chance like AZ, UT, WY, and NV does with the points they have, albeit small, I've still drawn some ridiculous hunts on those ridiculous odds, just a numbers game.

Colorado is middle of the road if you apply for more than one species. Heck Wyoming is over $800 non refundable to apply for and build points for all species. And I used to think AZ and NV were expensive with the non refundable license costs.

The issue I have with Colorado is the wide swings in pricing and policy over the last couple years and the extreme bias of price pressure on non-residents. Last year's draw numbers were out of control when they went to a system that doesn't charge up front for tags. This year I feel like the pendulum swung way to far the other direction.

Since last year, the legislature took the cuffs off on price controls allowing Parks and Wildlife to charge fees that accurately reflect the cost of managing the resource. To be fair, a lot of stuff stayed the same or barely moved the needle at all. A non-resident deer tag goes up $0.75 for example. However if I've got a bank of points that I've accumulated for sheep, moose, etc. and now I have to pay $100/year/species to keep those points? That sucks.

No, it's not Wyoming but at the same time it feels like instead of sitting down and coming up with a sane policy that can be effectively communicated and maintained over the long term, they are pursuing the trial and error method of wildlife management. I get the idea of a qualifying license (I think it's BS, but I get it) but going from a place where my last year's tag was a qualifier(and the gas I bought, and the food I bought, and the hotel I stayed in, and all the other money I put into CO over a 10 day period), to an $81 small game tag is kinda nuts. That's a lot of effing rabbits.

Wyoming’s nuts, I don’t apply for much there besides general elk and when I want to hunt pronghorn on no points.

WY is the WORST. I apply to almost every state in the west and WY makes me cringe every year. I think only California has a worse draw system

What's funny is I don't mind the $81.75 hunting license at all, I just hate all the other CO crap lol. They've priced me out of the big 3 @ 4 points. The good news is I'm $300+ richer each year! It's like I got a raise ;) And I can put in for Desert Sheep!

I don't mind it. Coming from PA, a state where the game commission is severely underfunded due to not raising the license fees, I don't mind paying a little extra to gain the points if it will increase the quality of the hunt when I finally get there. If the money I pay is not going to benefit the wildlife, then I got a problem with it. On a side note, any one know a good unit for squirrels?

now I have to pay $100/year/species to keep those points?

My understanding is that you don't have to pay to keep the points. You can apply with the number of points you have and stay at that point level going forward without buying additional points for $100/year/species. It sucks obviously, but you don't have to pay to keep your points.

To @jm1607's point, maybe we'll see an increase in applications for the random draw desert sheep hunts since they're not points based and won't cost the point fee for residents or nonresidents.
